Statement from the BBC Press Office

The BBC has confirmed this evening that a BBC team has come under fire from gunmen in a suburb of Riyadh. Cameraman Simon Cumbers, age 36, has been killed. BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner has been injured and is being treated in hospital in Riyadh. Both families have been informed.

Frank Gardner, age 42, is a leading expert on Al-Qaeda and works full-time reporting on the War On Terror. Simon Cumbers was a freelance journalist and cameraman who has worked throughout the world filming international news stories for the BBC and for news organisations such as Associated Press Television (APTN) and ITN. His unusual mix of technical expertise coupled with a journalistic background was at the heart of his success. The two men had travelled to Saudi Arabia last week following terrorist attacks in Khobar and have been reporting from the country for BBC News since then.

BBC Director of News Richard Sambrook said: "Our thoughts are with the families of Simon and Frank tonight. We are in touch with them and offering them all the support that we can. We are seeking more details about what happened in this incident."

I wish you'd stop editing posts adding details every minute! Makes people sound stupid...

I'm presuming it's the story that begins with "A man has been killed and a Briton injured after gunmen opened fire in a suburb of the Saudi capital Riyadh." Interesting they haven't/didn't name him as a BBC reporter.

Is there some sort of embargo on this story? As of a few minutes ago, News 24 started to report something with "Saudi Authorities" (or something starting with "Saudi" and the female presenter said "sorry... lets move on" before talking about D-Day.

Also, BBC News online havn't updated beyond the ticker at the top- they usually have a paragraph up with a breaking news image within minutes.

It just seems a bit odd to me that the story isn't being very widely reported despite it only having just happend (or been announced) and it actually involving BBC people.

Edit: Spoke to soon on the News online front, and my dad's recently seized control of the TV so News 24's gone off, so I can't check.

A few hours ago, NOL had a breaking news picture, and a headline along the lines of "One Briton killed in Saudi attack". It was like that, albeit with a picture, until about 22.30 - I've just checked again now, and they're reporting that it was a freelance cameraman and Frank Gardner, the BBC's security correspondent. I suppose it took a while to identify who had been killed/injured, and then for it to filter through as news.

I was shocked when I heard the news. When you see news reports on the television, you often forget the danger that reporters put themselves in to bring you the news. It makes you think about it when something like this happens.

My thoughts go out to both families and friends of the two people...... Sad

I suspect the BBC didn't report everything they knew until they had confirmed the facts AND informed the families of those involved.

Very sad news - and a reminder of the risks that reporters and crew take for our benefit - and that there are more important aspects to TV News than the colour of our astons and the design of our studios.

Irish cameraman killed, British journalist injured in shooting in Saudi capital

By DONNA ABU-NASR
Associated Press Writer

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - An Irish cameraman working for the British Broadcasting Corp. was killed and a British reporter injured in a shooting Sunday in the Saudi capital, just hours after the foreign minister said the kingdom was doing "everything we can" to protect citizens and residents.

The BBC identified the dead man as Simon Cumbers, 36, and the injured man as BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, 42.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw condemned the attack on the two journalists and pledged that Britain "will continue to do all we can to support the Saudi authorities in their fight against terrorism."

The violence came less than a week after 22 people, most of them foreigners, were killed in a shooting rampage and hostage-taking in the eastern Saudi oil hub of Khobar. Saudi security forces captured one of the four attackers in the May 29 assault and are still looking for the other three.

Many viewed the attack as an attempt by Islamic radicals to drive foreigners out of the kingdom, a move that could seriously hurt its oil industry. The attacks last week sent oil price to record highs.

The British Foreign Office has advised British nationals against all nonessential travel to Saudi Arabia. The United States has gone further, urging all of its citizens to leave the kingdom _ a move criticized by Saudi officials.

The two journalists had gone to Saudi Arabia last week after the terror attacks.

Cumbers was a freelance journalist and cameraman who had worked for Associated Press Television News and ITN, the BBC said. After the shooting, Saudi television showed footage of a dark-haired man sitting, half-upright, in the middle of a street, two bloodstains visible on his white shirt.

Saudi police said unidentified gunmen shot the two men at 5:45 p.m. in the Suweidi neighborhood of Riyadh, an ultraconservative area that has seen several shootouts between security forces and suspected militants.

Quite shocking news- particularly that AP description of Saudi TV showing the aftermath. It appears that CNN have found out that the shooting was "drive-by" in nature as the two men were out walking :

CNN posted:
The journalists, who traveled to Saudi Arabia last week, were walking in a neighborhood on the south side of Riyadh on Sunday when men in a passing car opened fire on them, a senior official at the Saudi Interior Ministry told CNN.

The assailants escaped, a Western diplomat said.

EDIT: It appears that more details are emerging about Frank Gardner's injuries. It now appears that he underwent emergency surgery:

The Scotsman posted:
Mr Gardener, 42, an expert on al Qaida, needed surgery following the attack in the southern district of Suweidi.

Saudi TV showed a dark-haired man sitting, half-upright, in the middle of a street, two bloodstains visible on his white shirt.

However Channel News Asia are reporting that his condition is not life-threatening:

Channel News Asia posted:
Hospital sources here said Gardner was out of danger after undergoing surgery at Al-Iman hospital. They said he would be moved to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in the capital.

They have also published a still of the Saudi TV coverage with a bloodstained man propping himself up in the street (having seen it, I believe this to be Gardner). I don't think it is appropriate to post the link to that on this forum.

I think I can remember Frank saying in an interview on Breakfast recently that he'd "think twice about" travelling to Saudi due to the current security situation.

The BBC would not announce any names until the family had been informed. Imagine hearing your son had been killed via Breaking News on News24
