And the song, yes, well done Ukraine!
Highlights for me included the bit at the end where they took about 5 minutes to get there, causing the two presenters to adlib for a heck of a long time. And when the female presenter referenced Terry Wogan, which came out of the blue.

Ah - but Terry is a Eurovision Legend. He has been mentioned a couple of times over the years recently by the presenters. (And occasionally shown on camera if they can get a shot of him in the commentary box)

After the comments in the HIGNFY thread, I was quite happy that it was MY problem, DAS.

However, tonight I was COMPARING the BBC audio with that of TVE and found the Spanish channel FAR superior, regardless of what state MY hearing is in.

I just wonder if anyone else found the same.

Perhaps Spain do not broadcast in Nicam stereo as i have noticed that Stereo broadcasts without the surround sound on can sometimes sound loud. i.e. music loud and words faint. I have the advantage (through the fluke inability of setting things up properly) of receiving digital TV in stereo via my scart socket and also on a different channel in mono. i listened to it in mono and I could hear everything much clearer. this is only a theory and i don't pretend that i know the answer but this may be one feasible explanation.

Err - TVE may broadcast NICAM stereo terrestrially - but it is highly unlikely they broadcast NICAM on satellite.

Apart from a brief flirtation with NICAM-over-satellite in the early 90s stereo audio on satellite is either carried on analogue FM carriers (for analogue satellite) with the option of added J17 pre-emphasis or Panda Wegener noise reduction (both of which mangle the sound a bit but make it "sound" better on poorer performing receivers / lower signa strengths) or by MPEG2 audio (with a possibility of DTS or Dolby Digital) on digital satellite.

NICAM is now pretty much limited to accompanying terrestrial analogue broadcasts - as the 728kbps required to carry it is a lot higher than the 128-256kbps used for MPEG2 audio. (A variant of NICAM IS used for C/D/D2 MAC audio though...)

The difference in audio between the BBC and TVE is likely to be due to the balance of commentary vs programme sound, and the level of compression / processing introduced in the programme chain. The BBC are also in the process of moving from M3 to M6 audio levels - meaning the stereo vs mono balance levels should be changing. The BBC also don't using anything as horrid as an Optimod or similar in their TV programme sound chains yet.

(For those that don't know - Optimod is one of the sound mangling devices that makes EVERYTHING SOUND VERY LOUD - and like commercial radio...)

I have to say I don't think the problem with political voting is as bad as most people make it out to be. Sure, it happens and it's not good to see. But I mean, Baltic bloc vote? Would that be the Baltic bloc vote which led to most of the Baltic countries being knocked out in the semi-final?

The contest is not as much fun as it used to be. I think we need to go back to juries, the popular vote just ends up with each country voting for it's neighbours. The political voting removes so much of the fun and unpredictability from the whole thing. It's no longer a "song" contest (you may at this point argue "was it ever?") it's on dance and overall performance. Songs have little to do with it.

If ABBA themselves stood on stage representing the UK I still don't think we'd win.

The 36 countries voting was slightly odd - but of course to qualify for a place in the semi-final next year, you have to show the contest...so it would have been pointless the broadcasters showing it to the likes of Belarus and Monaco and then not giving the viewers the option to vote.

It was pretty much the same under the old system - just that there were less countries and less that didn't qualify for the main contest.

Good to see BBC3 show some old clips of the voting - including the 1977 epic with Angie Rippon where the scores were all over the show and one country on the phone pointing out the Netherlands should have 7 points!! Brilliant!

Bring back illuminated LED scoreboards I say!

Yes IT IS ridiculous - the same with Ukraine and Russia. Spain and Andorra, and all across the Balkans!

Something needs to be done - its worse than a US General Election!

It's not ridiculous at all, it's perfectly logical. people aren't divided into nationality along clear national boundaries. There are lots of Spainish and French people in Andorra, lots of Greek originated people in Cyprus. The balkans and Ukraine/Russia were the same country until fairly recently - it's not surprising that a large number fo the voters are from or have links to the neighbouring country.

Just like the UK has lots of votes for Ireland every year. Nothing political there's just lots of Irish people residing here - it's not far away

I don't see why everyone always gets so shocked. It's always been political voting in Eurovision.

But the voting still always determines the best songs out of the contest. I think the top 7 songs were by far the best on the night. And they rightly got the appropriate votes.
