It was certainly a different way to go from the trailer to in vision continuity! One of those "Hey, we're on air quick" moments!

On Transdiffusion, there's a photo of the Tyne Tees Continuity studio in the 1960s, showing a map of the region on a wall, which was at a right angle to the continuity announcers chair. It wasn't a big photo. I commented on it, suggesting that it may have been for giving out a weather bulletin at closedown.

Speaking of closedowns, I know STV used to have the ILR station logos on the slide at closedown, but after the 1985 rebrand, it just had the names in standard STV font, not the logos. What other stations had the ILR stations logos on the slide at closedown, as opposed to just their names, in the standard font of the ITV company?

Until around 1987 the HTV West announcer was based in Cardiff - along with his/her HTV Wales counterpart. The two continuity studios both used CSO.

UTV used proper sets - which were regularly updated - from 1983 to 1997, when they then switched to CSO, which I believe they were using at the start of the 80s.

They went with a blue-screen set-up initially, switching to green-screen when a new studio was created as part of a new Central Technical Area at Havelock House in 2002, and which was retained until the last IVC link in 2016.

Surely the simple answer to that would be to use a separate source, not used for anything else for the backdrop?

Did they ever routinely do combined in-vision continuity for Wales and West ? (The sight of the Severn Bridge brought that question to mind !)

The Severn Bridge background was common on HTV West continuity but I seem to recall that it occasionally appeared on HTV Wales during joint in-vision announcing shifts from Pontcanna. These tended to be on weekend mornings and school holidays when a common schedule (with no local news/progs etc) meant that separate announcers weren’t always required. When just one announcer was rostered, the shift would normally be covered by the HTV West pool - often announcing out of vision to both Wales and West. Around mid-day, the arrival of another announcer to cover HTV Wales meant that separate announcements were made – in or out of vision, as required.

Watched that clip again with Peter Crawford at HTV West in Bristol, the camera zooming in to him. Firstly, would HTV West have played out the TV-am promo, or was that played out by the London contractor to all regions? If it was HTV West, then the fact that Peter waited until the camera zoomed into him, before speaking, means that perhaps it was intended that we would see the zoom in!

I imagine the TVam trail was played out locally, but either way it seems odd that the camera in the IVC studio wasn’t already zoomed in or “locked” in position. Perhaps this studio had other uses, but even so this surely was the last of a series of links from the studio that evening. I think it probably was intentional - the TC being a bit creative, maybe?

A network promo for TV-am often followed News at Ten but this one would have been played out by HTV as it was scheduled in the middle of a local junction (between an HTV Helpline announcement and the station closedown).
I would think the odd looking zoom in to Peter, plus the late audio, was due to finger trouble. It’s possible that the wider shot had last been used for the local news at 22:30 and the TC in Cardiff realised at the last minute that it wasn’t correct for closedown. A new working practice, caused by the relocation of the HTV West announcer from Cardiff to Bristol (which occurred around this time), may well have been a contributory factor with the TC’s still getting used to taking the West announcer via a remote source etc

Did the TSW continuity studio move location during the franchise? In it's later days it looked so much bigger than originally - or was that just a wider shot?

Does anyone know where in Middlesbrough Tyne Tees had their offices? Did all companies have their second offices in a prominent town or city centre location?
