If you want to pinpoint an ITV company which for most of its existence had very weak presentation relative to its size, Granada has to be up there.
For most of its existence it had pres that looked like Border on a bad day, then going into the 1990s its idea of polishing its branding up was to add the most perfunctory "animation" to its ident, and basically steal the jingle from, of all things, the 1986 IBA ident.
And the less said about the 1996 Granada Tonight, cribbed from some awful American graphics package, the better really.
But then they made up for it in other areas.
*round of applause* ^
For a time I thought I was in a minority about Granada.
I'm not going to for one second argue that their programming slate to the region or the network was brilliant with pretty much everything from hard hitting documentaries, contemporary and period dramas, Corrie, and the pre-Action Time game and quizshows.
But, the low octane nature of their pre 1992 on screen regional identity - almost treating the G logo with contempt was baffling.
Yes, letting the actual programmes speak for themselves is a good idea, but when other ITV regions were selling themselves and the area they were broadcasting to, given the creative rescources and ideas coming out of Quay Street, our friends in the north(west) were happy to have Colin Weston in an unfortunate tie and jacket combo do all the leg work.
For all it's basic nature, they may have well got the continuity annoucers to introduce the next programme over the ticking down Granada VT clock.
