P.S. Can anyone post a weekday schedule for a That's TV channel, and how much of that is networked. Don't seem to be a schedule on their website.
That’s Cumbria literally has “Cumbria Headline News” replayed every hour of the day, and on weekend it is “Cumbria Highlights” which is just the reports from Headline News that week replayed every hour again.

Yep, That's Hampshire and That's Thames Valley are exactly the same. Utterly useless, and the wrong aspect ratio, full of motion artefacts, 1940s material they had running on a loop over Christmas was unwatchable dirge on several levels. The whole operation is actually all a total disgrace to the UK broadcasting industry

Tony Hall announced in his speech on the 50th anniversary of BBC Local Radio that they will no longer target just the over 50s, and in future it will be for 'everybody'. Whether they will be successful at attracting younger audiences I am rather sceptical about, however.

Before taking sustaining national (and before that regional) programmes, some local radio stations used to have programmes based essentially around VI formers, with a "yoof" facing presenter. Perhaps the audience was small, but it was an example of "open" or "access" broadcasting.

Humberside had something called "The Paull Hunsley Electric Wireless Show" - presumably, now it would only be "The Hunsley Show".

Tony Hall's speech makes sense to me. The BBC needs to grasp that its success is not only measured by audience comparators against the commercial sector and that in UK broadcast terms BBC Local Radio is so cheap that you can afford to experiment with it.

I've offered my series Walks Around Britain to That's TV on several occasions, which would be available to them free of charge, as it is paid for by product placement... and every time they've said no.

That being the case, it's a chance for the BBC to carve a real niche for itself - and not just in English local radio which is aimed at a particular older audience.

Oh I don’t know. I’m sure all the kids will be ditching Capital and Spotify for the chance of hearing a phone-in about bin collections. Wink

I thought biscuits is BBC LR's raison d'être?

Seen that in a few local channel schedules and think it might be on Community Channel too - exactly the sort of national show that should be supplementing local content.

Understand if it's a question you may not wish to answer but out of interest how much does a series of that nature cost to produce?

Pretty sure it’s the same for That’s Lancashire also, it brings nothing to the table.

Bay TV Swansea is to rebrand as That's Swansea Bay.

Sounds like a teenager showing his girlfriend around Wales.

"What's that?"
"That's Swansea, bae."

The time must be coming to consider closing this service down, with 700 MHz clearance in train, the bandwidth is at a premium and really shouldn't be reserved for a token local service, which these channels have become.

Thank god OFCOM gave the local licence to STV if the rest of the local channels churn out this much garbage. Who knows what we would have got it someone else had got the licence.

Even STV though now offer a service less local than it's ITV franchises - clearly even with an established news and broadcast operation behind them the cost of maintaining the localness of STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh was still too prohibitive. To me STV is the model that should work - a regional broadcast holding multiple local licences, but the schedule does need to at least deviate for local news and some signature local programming.

If That's TV was a quality broadcaster a news programme repeated every hour wouldn't necessarily be the worst way to fill a local channel - that's how the CBS online news channel effectively operates.

With regards to BBC local radio - when Tony Hall said "everyone", I hope he was thinking more in terms of the Radio 2 target audience. There are plenty of people aged 35 and upwards who are buying houses, setting down roots, having kids and give a toss about their local area. Local commercial radio is a few years away from death and local newspapers, where they exist, are predominantly skeleton staffed ****. The argument against the BBC putting a greater emphasis on covering local areas is gone.

On STV Glasgow/Edinburgh/STV2 - I'm not sure how much money they can be making for STV. They feel part vanity broadcasting and part there simply to avoid someone else taking the licences. The introduction of the BBC Scotland channel is unlikely to help, further splintering a relatively small population which has plenty of alternative choices.
