Although it's clearly electronic, I wonder if the endcap on that video is actually colour electronically added to a physical caption, like they used to do with idents? The wonky G in Granada makes me wonder that more than anything. We've just started seeing this version of the endcap on the ITV3 episodes, though it does alternate with what is quite clearly a physical caption, and the size and position changing between episodes. Looking at the Network DVDs, that situation seems to continue until the "Production for IT*" endcap comes in during 1989, though the endcap on some 1986-89 episodes does look more entirely electronically generated than the one here- without the wonky G.

That's a mock-up unfortunately, original is here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85j3tfL_1V0
Here it is in December 2004 when Karen McDonald left Coronation Street:

They did, however, play the longer version of the theme (which isn’t shown on that video) presumably as the taxi was seen driving away.
The omnibus used to use a longer and slower arrangement of the closing theme (with the additional bars at the end as heard prior to 2010). I think Karen’s exit was the last time we heard the “middle eight” (or whatever the correct expression is!)

Would be nice to see a recording of the end credits!
EDIT: Are we sure the video previously posted was a mock (obviously the opening titles are) but that ending sounds familiar. The ITV2 recording without the extended theme may be part-way through an omnibus, and therefore re-edited to remove the closing theme.
The episode is on the 2004 Network DVD, I can have a peek at it to see what's on there!

Sorry, I deleted that post, I realised I was wrong- it's the Xmas day episode that's on the DVD, it was the boxing day one where Karen left.

Thanks anyway - but see my own edit above. I think the original video that was shared is indeed the correct ending as originally broadcast.

Gosh, they were showing the second last credit at the point in the music when the theme was faded up in the 90s/00s episodes!
I know the purpose of the longer credits was to show the pigeon landing on the Rovers sign, but they didn’t have to be that long to achieve this - the van is stationary for about 15 seconds before pulling away which could have been cut, and the freeze after the bird lands could have been shorter. Obviously they had plenty time to fill!
Apologies for the delay, but here are the extended end credits of the "Rovers Fire" episode in 1986 (Until ITV plc delete it from YouTube, that is)
My topping & tailing editing didn't seem to work

The use of the 'middle eight' was similar to the use of Julia's Theme on EastEnders, in the later years of the 80's and 90's it was only used on special occasions. Prior to this it was used quite regularly. Examples are Episode 1729 when Stan and Eddie lose the tandem. The extended theme plays as the camera pulls back from a nondescript street somewhere in Weatherfield to show rows upon rows of terrace housing, very atmospheric. Another one I remember from the G Plus repeats is episode 2249 from 1982. Brian Tilsley gives Sharon a lift home to Coronation Street. The camera is really high up somewhere (possibly on top of the Bonded Warehouse) and is zoomed in. Sharon gets out and stands at the door of 9 Coronation Street. The camera pulls back and its really dark but you see the Street bright and as the camera pulls back you see Manchester and Salford in the distance, giving a real sense of Coronation Street's place in the 'real world'. It's a very classy ending to the episode. So much care and attention was taken then with the music etc.

I remember that too. It was a nice way of showing off the new outdoor set, and being night-time hid any tell-tale signs of it being part of the Granada lot.

With us getting a couple of Granada Plus versions of the episodes this week, I'm wondering if the episodes that ended up as G+ versions on the DVD will end up on ITV3 too, or if we'll get the originals? The next one is Kevin & Sally's wedding, which is less than 3 weeks away (though I'll be out of the country for nearly 2 weeks when it's on, so I'll have to wait till December till I see it, and the other 18 episodes that will be shown while I'm away
)!

When was the last time we saw any of the front rooms in the old housing in the street? since most of the time it goes straight to the Living room/kitchen ?
