BBC Darts evolution

Up to 1997, much like old snooker, the score flashed up on screen every so often. The design of the aston varied over the years, but it contained all the relevant info.

Then in 1998 the BBC started a permanent on-screen score with a rather garish colour scheme tucked into the bottom right of the screen, only on-show during split-screen shots. In 1999 that was toned down to a rather classy black/red/green effort, plus they had a separate full-width scoreboard when the leg came down to makeable outs. 2000 - 2003 saw the pastely silver, teal and salmon effort on screen, which also had a full-width version for checkout attempts. 2004 saw everything tidied up and standardised, with this stacked, neat red block version. It went "3D" in 2007 and then a year later, bizarrely, went full width for the whole match. This obviously wasn't popular as it reverted in 2009 (with a permanent BBC Sport slug sticking out the bottom) before getting its current design in 2011. I say current, as BDO darts aren't on the BBC any more, and probably won't be again, it may be its LAST design.

Proponents of the theory that television is dumbing down can point out the move from "Best of x sets" to "First to y sets" if they wish.

An interesting footnote about the last look is that, as the coverage was shared between BBC and BT, BT used their own scoreboard however this was "skinned" for BBC highlights shows. However because BT put their gfx in a slightly different place to BBC, due to placement of the BT Sport DOG, their box was hard right to the safe area while BBC's was flush left to the split screen.

I like how you colour co-ordinate your years too. The 2000 version is the best there IMO - quite clear, a nice enough colour and a little bit of style to it, but not overstyled.

I do wonder how much BBC Sport's graphics will evolve now moving forward considering there isn't really a BBC Sport department in the way there once was - there are just a number of separate events the BBC covers. I wouldn't be surprised to see a move back towards more individual event specific graphics.

It's amazing what I'll do to delay Christmas shopping on Amazon.

Something I mentioned a few pages back: Turns out the 1997 Canadian GP was the first time a constant lap counter at the top of the screen was used for F1 coverage, albiet only for F1 Digital viewers in mainland Europe. The entire graphic package was refreshed for digital the following year.

I've had to make this gfx a bit bigger because.... well.... Sky.

Sky as a whole hardly got through a year in the 1990s without some sort of rebrand or another. Their first PDC tournament, the 1994 World Championship, saw the debut of the in-the-corner darts gfx, albeit only on screen between throws. This went a garish pink in 1995 and then followed the Sky Sports corporate style through 96, 97 and 98. 1999 saw its own implementation of the full-width bar during checkouts, obviously a fad of the time to tie in with the push to widescreen or some hoopty like that. After a minor cosmetic change in 2001, 2003-2007 saw various interpretations of the bold red-white-blue template Sky were using at the time before it all calmed down in 2008 and the now familiar shiny skeuomorphic metal scoreboard came in, albeit with a floaty translucent rectangle behind it which I never understood. The colours were amended to dart board colours in 2013 and the floaty rectangle floated off into history.

I really shouldn't be finding this this interesting.

P.S. Off topic but talking darts has C4 confirmed it's host yet?

No. But the BDO have.

BBC had PDC darts this year for the first time (Champions League) and used a similar set to the 2011-16 BDO ones. Just moved to the new graphics set like other BBC Sport currently.

Sky Darts are effectively two graphics 'eras' behind the other sports and even recently still using the old font and everything.

For comparison, here's BBC v BT's graphics, from Lakeside earlier this year:

of course, it'll all be different next month: as well as Channel 4 taking over from the BBC, BT have a new house style.

Going off topic again but have BT managed to rollout their new style to all sports. Usually with previous BBC, Sky and ITV rebrands the minor sports can find themselves left with the previous style months, sometimes years, later.

Ah yes... I'd forgotten that!
