Homosexuality was hardly hidden away in 1999, even if people weren't as open as they've become since.
It wasn't hidden away, but it was highly unusual for a gay couple to walk down a street holding hands and to kiss in public. Not without getting some looks from everyone around.
Speaking as, erm, "not exactly a ladies' man" myself... I had no issue with this scene, took no offence, found it amusing, and "got" why it was as valid for inclusion as a "look what's changed since 1999" reference as all the other stuff like smartphones, baristas etc.
Arguably, the fact that Gary has spent 17 years stuck in a "less enlightened" era would be a factor in his surprise at seeing such openness in public.

There is a bbc 2 sting and Menu added to this page.
I'd be surprised if it doesn't end up at ITV, considering the already established relationship with Birds.
I wouldn't be suprised if they're biting the arm off to get it. I can't beleive the BBC have passed on it seeing as it was clearly the most successful out of the 4. Porridge was mediocre at best. Downright dreadful at worst.

So glad Porridge has been chosen. As a full series, it has the potential to be both comedy and social commentary on the prison system. Goodnight Sweetheart, as good as it was, just doesn't seem to bring much new, other than poking fun at hipsters and millennials.
If there could only be one choice, Porridge is what I wanted. But why not bring both back?
