5 News Rebrand

Here is my rebrand of ‘5 News’, currently supplied by ITN to Channel 5. Channel 5 recently refreshed its brand, but 5 News just had the new 5 logo slapped onto its existing graphics. Since the rebrand, I’ve been working on a new brand identity for 5 News. I started by looking at the new website, and noticed how common the parallelograms were. I decided to create a parallelogram shaped logo.

Format wise, there are two bulletins a day. I would simply call the first bulletin ‘5 News’, but the second bulletin would revert back to ‘NewsTalk from 5 News’. The first bulletin is a traditional news bulletin, with both Matt Barbet and Sian Williams, but the second bulletin is a panel based show discussing the days news stories. Sian and Matt would front the second show on alternate days. A news discussion show is different from the traditional national news bulletin that ITV News is showing at the same time, and the BBC Regional News.

The colour scheme is a little unusual, mint green is not normally associated with news. However, I feel the colours are distinctive enough to make 5 News stand out, and the colours are very different from BBC News red, ITV News blue and Channel 4 purple.

For the studio, I decided to ditch the green screen for a real studio. As shown below, the studio is pretty small, but it’s about the size that 5 News actually needs.

The two programs use the same set, but with different desks. I'm not sure how difficult this would be, but there is an hour between the two shows, which should be plenty long enough to swap the desks around.

For those unfamiliar with 5 News, here's some comparisons:

I don't really like the set. Its too GMB. The vast amount of white doesn't look right with splashes of mint green. May look okay-ish in Sketchup although in reality it would look like a studio of one programme using the graphics of another. It's not the right set for the right colour scheme.

Plus it seems in the set the on-screen graphics become blue? Thought it was 'mint green'?

Light blue, dark blue, berry and mint are the four brand colours. Using mint on the set was too much of the same colour, there needed to be a variety of colours.

The colours are fine, but the logo and set ain't.

If you could go into a little bit more detail, that might help me improve it.

Referring to the 'special' graphics. You need to a lot more than just some red and blue lines if your going to present it as a special package. It seems you've changed the colours and rushed it just to show that you've done more. Don't bother with add-ons until you have the default right. Your rushing too much.

Really like the graphics - crisp, simple and consistent.

Studio is meh - it seems too American (and thus a bit GMB) with all the wood veneer and panelling. Also I think the space seems a bit too big for 5 News, even if they are moving to a new location. The set isn't poorly executed, it just doesn't seem to work here. I'll give 4 stars for the graphics and 2 stars for the set.

The desks with the barstools around it looks too similar to Loose Women in my opinion, but I like the other desk and the graphics.

While the graphics have been executed quite well, I can't help but think they look too much like Loose Women's (especially the newer refresh of the graphics they just had)

Firstly great to see a new mock on the gallery - it seems to have been a while.

I echo the other comments though - the set is too GMB and just a bit too generic - 5 News really needs to find it's identity again and this isn't it. Also your before and after pic just shows the logo isn't that great - parallelograms are tricky to get right in TV presentation. The set doesn't look to be an improvement either in those before and after shots.

Thanks for all the comments. So clearly, there are issues with the set. For v2, how about removing the white cladding and replacing it with glass, which looks out onto a real newsroom, or potentially a atrium style CGI newsroom? I feel this may be too similar to all of the other news channels though. At least the programme would be returning to its roots with a newsroom.

Have to agree, especially with that NewsTalk desk.
