Excluding the celebrity ident look, what do we think is the worst ident of all time. This could be ranging from the hearts idents to the eye exploding Harlech look.

For me it has to be the 1989 generic idents, because although the idea was sound, the pathetic logos they came up with for the Vs was just astonshingly bad! I mean were they hoping to scrap the regional logos and go with this. God no!

What say everyone?

the ident didn't have that eye exploding-effect on 405-line television, but of course it still pretty odd, though i like it.

Well, if you ask the people interestet in tv-pres you'll most likely hear answers like:

- Ulster 21st Anniversary Ident (1984~91[?]) (which, in my opinion is a pretty good ident, it just symbolizes broadcasting for me)

- Yorkshire Television (from the introduction of colour till the liquid gold ident appeared)

- The Westcountry identity

and

- the very first Ulster Television Ident (scary but meaningful, check Transdiffusion for details)

But my choice would be ...

... drumroll ...

"and the loser is ..."

C3NE ( 1996-98 ) for lousy animation, overall ugliness and a cheap jingle taken from a demo cd produced by the designer's deaf brother-in-law.

Ulster's "Lollipop" ident (mid to late 70s?) has to be one of the worst idents IMO.

Tha scariest ident for me was the blue--on-yellow OU ident with accompanying trumpet fanfare.

Oh and don't get me started on the BBC ONE dancers ... the worst by far of which is Pop Video ...

That's the one from 1984 I meant.

Although this may be controversial for some, the ident I didn't like was the early attempt at the TSW logo. It seems that it starts smoothly to begin with but just before the hand, the graphic would jolt, almost like it was part of the package that made the ident and then finish. It wasn't smooth at all.

Although I haven't seen it first hand, Channel's 1992 logo on TV Ark has the most bizzare ident music I have ever heard. Sort of like a string section doing a warm up routine. With a poor "CTV" graphic. It's just rubbish.

Followed a close second by the 1996-1999 Carlton idents. Clever idea let down by rubbish graphics.

The UTV "lollipop"/"telly on a stick" was first used on-screen on 31st October 1980, their 21st anniversary, not 1984 for their 25th anniversary, and it was last shown in September 1988 to the best of my knowledge.

I don't hate the "lollipop" as it was part of my formative years and earliest TV memories Smile

The C3NE Idents and other presentation of the time. The ident introduced when C3NE was scrapped wasn't much better either, save for the 'alternative' versions produced in Newcastle. The matching News and Spot pres was also vile.

UTV's breakbumper come ident was a right bag of sh*t.

"UTV's breakbumper come ident was a right bag of sh*t."

And still being used up to last week.

The current ITV1 idents are too garish and bright. Also, the BBC ONE Haka and Africa dance idents must rate badly.

I don't like the first TSW ident either. Whilst the jingle was quite upbeat and forward looking for it's time (as tacky as it sounds today), I don't rate the animation that was used. It was a clever idea, blending together computer animation, claymation, and traditional stop-frame techniques, but ultimately it all looked very disjointed. Choosing one technique over the other (or maybe going for the 'computer assisted' animation style that was popular at the time) would have made a much better ident.

The second ident on the other hand was a classic and a half

I would have to agree on you about the BBC1 Africa ident. i find it quite weird. ( Sorry to be off-topic on itv1 worst idents.)
