A little more news from new york, looks like the crew and reporter are in a 'not life threatening, but serios' condition, whatever that means! That's direct from WNBC. Lets just hope that all the crew pull through, as that is a terrible tragedy for any news network. If this ever (heaven forbid) happened to skycopter, i'm sure they would provide the same coverage....

WNBC is not a news network. Its a NBC affiliate station for New York City. Its interesting to note that WABC ABC 7 was also on scene reporting live on the shoot at the same time when this tragedy occured. Its likely that WNYW -FOX 5, WCBS - CBS2 were probably in the sky over the scene as well.
Their is nothing humourous about a helicopter crash. Its worth noting that this is the Second Chopper crash is 2 year for WNBC Channel 4 New York. News Choppers have crashed before but never over such a highly urbanized area.

Not quite - they wouldn't be able to report using another helicopter as they only have one!
What is it with American TV names - what the hell is WNYW supposed to stand for?
"Next on WCBS - CBS2..." - makes UKTV G2 almost catchy!

Even though those screengrabs are quite obviously from WABC
Just seen the crash on News 24.... I wonder why someone was filming the helicopter in the first place?

Call signs - needed by the FCC... they always mean something. ie) KTLA - "Television Los Angeles"
WNBC - NBC's flagship (as per WABC, WCBS)
WGN - "World's Greatest Newspaper"
et cetera
Maybe it's the fact there's SO MANY TV and radio stations they can't just have a ambiguous name...

From the brief bit of video I saw on the website, I think it was the case that all of the news helicopters were at the scene of a shooting, or something typically American like that. Ahem.
Obviously the pilots of the helicopters will be watching the other helicopters to make sure they don't crash into each other, so presumably the pilot of the ABC helicopter, sorry, chopper, alerted the ABC cameraman to the fact that WNBC were having a few problems and they filmed it.

All commercial television stations in the US use called letter to identify themselves from each other. In your quote about your refer to the station using the network name the channel number and the call sign. That almost never happens. Only on the channel idents. They would normally say "Next on CBS 2". WNYW is the FOX affiliate for NYC. Its an owned and operated station, meaning its owned and operated by the FOX network. W is the beginning letter for most stations east of the Mississippii River. NY obivously stands for New York and the W is because there is a Public Radio station the uses WNYC-FM already. So they may have picked it to differentiate itself. But they would have been well in their rights to choose WNYC-TV as their is no TV station to my knowledge in New York with those call signals. But their may be some small low power station that snagged it already.
