Where can SKYnews go now...

With the blatently ripped off... er I mean Inspired new looks of ITV News and BBC News from the presenting styles SKYnews brought in since 2001, with SKYnews planning a new look, where can the go now.

The ITV News 'Screen' has outdone the Newswall, and floormaps, in both accessabilty, useability, and function. By this I mean, they Screen is more integral to ITV News then the Newswall to SKYnews...

Animated Clear large graphics, have been copied with ITV and the BBC, in a more effective, animated, clean, stylish way...

The effective alert of Breaking News has been copied and intensifyed with ITV and the BBC...

The Newsroom in shot, and the energy of the Presenters, are the only element SKYnews still have the advantage on, but is moot when put in the overall approach to news presentation, which was unique to SKYnews when they pioneered it in 2001.

This thread is, I hope going to encourage lively debate as to where news presentation has to go, in the coming years. As well as a discussion on what SKYnews needs to do to once again lead the way in News Presentation.

I do hope this thread does not become a BBC Vs ITV Vs SKY debate, as that would not be helpful...

I'm not even sure this question is valid.

I think the presentation part of the news channel is attributable to only a small part of its success.

Sky has long had a reputation for breaking news first, and as long as they continue to do this, they can't go far wrong.

I agree ITV News has evolved some of the most useful features of both Sky News and BBC News presentation, but this alone doesn't make it a winner. Having presenters the target audience can identify and connect to and being able to break complex stories into easily accessible modules is something Sky News does very well (I'm thinking about The Hutton Inquiry and The Soham Trial here - ITV News did not go to the amount of bother Sky News did).

Also, what you have to remember is that ITN does not have nearly the budget Sky News does, so will all this flashy presentation be used on the news channel in the way in which Sky pulls out the stops? I doubt it - considering they don’t even have enough staff to cover the early shift and STILL it seems have to repeat the morning news (unless this has changed).

Personally, I don’t think Sky has anything to worry about. I certainly won't be changing my viewing habbits just because they have new straps nad a set.

As you may know, I am a strong advocate for SKYnews. People see it as obsessive, but I just think its great. I dont think SKYnews will move down into obscurity, but it is also true to say, back in 2001, the newswall, floormaps etc were unique, and SKYnews became a pioneer (it really started with the election coverage) but before that, they were just a bog standard news channel. Now all that SKY pioneered back then, has been perverted and emulated by both ITV and the BBC.

SKYnews' strengths are still there, and still set it apart, but their 'babies' they introduced to the world, have been taken and used by the rivals.

I am finding it hard to see what SKY could do to once again pioneer new methods of presenting the news to us, and with their new look, will they have to make some changes to stay ahead on the graphics front?

In terms of broadcasting I really don't think there are any innovative ideas left so I thought it was pretty much obvious that many of the current newswall, VR, and other gimmicks were used from ITV.

I still prefer Sky News to the rest. BBC and ITV just don't do it for me. With Sky you feel as if you know the presenters, and that's very important.
Looking between ITV and Sky today, it made me think 'Gosh, the Sky Newswall looks a bit small now' - but at least it's REAL, and you can tell it is. However good it looks at present, I think Sky should upgrade the newswall in the near future - not to make it bigger but to get rid of the squares that divide up the screen - something like the new Coca Cola Screen at Picadilly Circus (with the definition of a cinema screen). That really would put ITV's wall of CSO to shame.

For me, the BBC is who I turn to in matters of crisis etc. So I suppose it's my preferred 24 hour rolling news channel. I feel at ease when I'm watching the BBC. The presentation does'nt play an important role, it's the content I'm after. Sky News seems to rely too heavily on the "presentation" of it's set, graphics etc. But that's just my opinion.

But it is intruiging. How can Sky develop a new approach to the news? As they've done before in the past, with the news wall etc? Whens the relaunch?

I've no idea what SKYnews can do. Maybe they should look towards BBCnews and ITVnews. Also, while they're at it, they must not forget to look at CHANNEL4news and FIVEnews.

Well January 1st when the newsroom was re-decorated, was a launch date banded about. but I guess they have waited to see ITV News' new look, and the fact that their 15th birthday is in 2 days. The new idents when they arrive can now have "over 15 years" on them as oposed to the current "over 10 years" comment used at present.

Someones in a funny mood today lol.

But to make a serious comment on your post, Its the fact that ITV News and BBC News have been 'looking towards' SKYnews which puts them in the situation.

The channel is called Sky News not SKYnews

Your insistence on writing SKYnews just makes you look foolish Martin

And the fact you are making such a fuss and typing in red and large makes you look childish!

So back on topic. Have any of you had any ideas in the past for new ways to present the News, that may be good for SKYnews...

I don't think he's being childish by pointing out a very irritating element of your posts. I could understand if you were directly addressing the actual logo - but you're not. If you were, it would be SKY NEWS.

Anyway, back on topic, I have always been an advocate of ITV/ITN News but can recognise it's flaws. As a news channel - at the moment - Sky beats it hands down. N24 is aiming for a different demographic anyway, whilst ITV News, i feel, is more suitable for me.
