I would say they're a bit OTT. The thing about that clip that annoys me is that they read out the presenter's name and then they have someone else sitting in, I don't know why they do that?

'The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather' 'Hi, Dan Rather's off tonight...'

Put The Telly On
"Its Today with Des and Mel. Please Welcome Paul O'Grady and Melanie Sykes!"
Breakfast with Frost is another one.

Touch wood, Richard & Judy have always remained Richard & Judy since their transfer to Channel 4 in 2001.

No sensationalistic is the appropriate word.
Well because the newscasts are so localized the newspresenters themselves are local celebrities. In some of the medium to large markets they make well over a million dollars a year and the viewers have an attachment to them. In Chicago when Diane Burns left WLS -ABC 7 it was front page news because she was poached by WBBM - CBS 2 and the ratings for 7 has slightly dropped. WLS has been the 10pm news winners for the past 10 years. So the presenter team is usually the draw. If the viewers trust them and like their personality then they will watch the station. AND that is part and parcel to be a credible news station because you present the stories that matters to viewer.

I grew up in the Chicago area, and remember the heyday of WBBM's news operation in the 70s and early 80s. (Matter of fact, my uncle was a reporter for them at the time) I also lived in that area between 89 & 94 (when I moved to Atlanta). In that time frame, WBBM was trying to recapture their lost audience; they had lost the ratings crown to WLS-TV. 'BBM tried everything, and looked worse and worse as they did it.

They went through a tabloid phase (as shown by the screaming in your face open), and really looked bad to those of us who remember the "old days." In contrast, WLS, WMAQ, WGN and even WFLD's newscasts all looked tame by comparison.

And it took me a minute to get used to Lester Holt without his moustache on MSNBC, after seeing him with it for so many years on WBBM.

Not quite. They missed a couple of episodes a while back, and it was presented by Richard Whitely and Linda Barker one day, and Vanessa Feltz and another man who's name escapes me the other day.
