Actually not that often, Larry.

I know it's the only counter that the Beeb have, but really they do play it up rather too much.

And tell me, if it's so shoddy and unreliable, why does it grace the screens of the news centre and why do staff there put so much effort into copying it?

It's all so puzzling.

But I think that just adds to the general atmosphere and watchability of the channel. The presenters and guests speculating about sketchy wire reports is what makes Sky News more watchable. Sure, they make mistakes, but so does the BBC, in the case of the latter, those mistakes resulted in the death of a government scientist.

Like I just said, nothing has been proved or disproved - perhaps you should pay attention to the point of the Hutton Inquiry.

I mean, I'd much rather have my facts checked before I see them on TV than listen to some of the hearsay that comes from Sky News.

The Sky News reconstructions might be a little cheesey, but they do the job, and when you consider the turn around time, I think they are excellent, and it makes a quite complicated case quite easy to follow.

Well, Sky have made more of an effort than the BBC has, and they are the very corporation at the centre of this row. I find it quite astonishing to be honest, especially when you consider the whole credibility and impartiality of BBC News is at stake.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? So all the people down there PROPERLY reporting on it for N24, the 1/6/10 and Newsnight are making no effort?

Do you even watch the BBC? Or have you superglued the remote buttons down so you can't change from 501?

Oh I love the reconstructions - although I think they should have used Sky News presenters instead of actors. Along with an American style intro.

*OTT AMERICAN VOICEOVER*

"From the makers of Bob and Anna's Into 2000 spectacular...and the Kay and Frank punch up LIVE....Sky News presents...a British Sky Broadcasting production......THE HUTTON INQUIRY"

Oh, I can see it now! Laughing

"STARRING Bob Friend as Lord Hutton, Jeremy Thompson as Tony Blair...and Chris Rogers as Dr David Kelly"

Laughing

I have been watching the coverage accross all channels. I'm not saying that the reporters and journalists themselves are making no effort, but the corporation's presentation of the whole affair lacks a certain polish. Newsnight is about the only programme what I have seen exploring it in any level depth.

Hehehe - yeah! C'mon! Fight fight fight!

always seem scared to break out of their headline updates or business reports or sports coverage when they actually have a concrete piece of information

And that's a bad thing? How many times have Sky got things wrong because of their reliance on using wires for breaking news? I mean, perhaps we should rename Sky's breaking news coverage as "Sky Breaking News, thanks to PA wires"?

Witness their pathetic attemps at covering the Hutton Inquiry, even I am prepared to admit that ITV have done it better.

Sky's reconstructions are nothing short of embaressing.

shoddy reporting by the Beeb in the first place.

Anyway - good news, the BBC is now only ONE DAY behind with events.

How can they be a day behind when you just said it was in their running order yesterday?

Good stuff. It's not the case that News 24 is less tabloid than Sky, it's just that they're not as good at it.

There I will agree- the BBC has no place producing tabloid-style programming -- but what little of it that appeared on N24 has started to go.

They didn't realise what a great story it was until today, when it started to headline their bulletins.

The Sky reconstructions are impressive for, as has been mentioned, their increadibly rapid turnaround, and the fact that they are bothering in the first place. At least they are prepared to stick their neck out and do something different - unlike the BBC.

News 24 will always have tabloid stories because Sky will always have enough weight within the industry to play them up. Had News 24 decided not to cover the Soham murders in such detail - because it was too tabloid for them - what would the impact have been? Even fewer viewers? At the end of the day, the Beeb have to justify News 24, and without viewers they simply cannot.

It's funny, CNN had (and are having now, actually, though to a lesser extent) a big fuss about how tabloid and crime-orientated their coverage had become just after the Jon Benet Ramsey murder in 1995. Ted Turner said they couldn't and shouldn't do crime stories in a big way, so they ended up missing out on a significant number of very major stories, losing half of their audience and er... now look at them.

I'm sure News 24 would like to be more distinctive, but as things stand it's too scared to do anything other than follow.

So the N24 15 minute round-ups at 4.30 haven't made its way to your TV ...

And the fact that the 1/6/10 are only 30 minutes long, and have other news to cover, hasn't crossed your mind?

Lack of polish ... what cr@p. You really are a muppet.
