Here's the off-air of the 14/7/88 edition for anyone who wants to compare it to the mute links one:

I admit I find these mute links and raw studio tapes fascinating, not least because they give insight into the production process.

One thing I actually noticed on the mute link version of 14-7-88, you can hear the Salt n Pepa video being rewound after they cut back to Simon & Bruno. It's drowned out by the cheering and presenters talking on the off-air version.

I noticed that too - none of the other mute link editions I've seen have that type of thing audible, although even with the audience noise + Gary Davies talking over it you can hear the tape for the repeat of Bronski Beat's performance being rewound during its introduction in the skipped 21/06/1984 episode.

Whoever's doing the Cypher graphics on this edition now on BBC Four is taking their work literally.

A black box.

A gun for 'Just Like Jesse James.

A heart for 'Bad Love'.

A present - not a toaster.

A train for Rod Stewart.

And a steamy window for Tina Turner.

I remember the Jesse James one from the original broadcast, I was so blown away by it (pun intended) that I made a point of telling my mum about how amazing it was. She didn't understand 'what a real gun?'

You forgot the graphics for Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady) at the end of yesterday’s second episode. The ‘A’ and ‘M’ of Aerosmith flew around the screen like an aeroplane. And they managed to get the letters of the title together walking round the bottom of the screen formed as a woman - with the two D’s as breasts, K for legs, O for a face and the brackets as hair.

Ingenious.

Maybe it'll just be a picture of a house or a green door.

I still like these animations because they're quite imaginitive even if some of them are cheesy and it looks quite dated now, rather than just the same animation being used on every song as was the case after the 1991 revamp.

Mark Goodier's been on twitter cringing at both the shirt he was wearing and predicting Cliff's song would go top 5. I always like seeing the presenters engaging with these repeats on social media and responding to other people's comments on them.

Did anyone else just spot Jonathan King in the video for the last record - Brits 1990 Various Artists?

And in the photo for the song during the top 40 countdown.
