If you really think that Saturday night television is that bad, and you are not going out - here's an idea - don't watch it.

They couldn't do that, that would be to easy! Very Happy and wouldn't stop them commenting anyway

Pop Idol may well have captured the 1 second attention span of some of Britain's brain doners, but it was a one off (thank god).

Wrong i'm afraid. A celebrity version (how?) is being roled out within a few months and Pop Idol 2 is planned for Autumn.

Also, what does everyone think about both finalists getting record deals, effectively making the final vote pointless and a con. I think all money raised through votes on Saturday should be given to charity.

To be honest, I don't watch either channel Saturday night. Both are as bad as each other, and neither know when to let a once-mighty programme rest. Jim Davidson's Generation Game has mutated into what should rightly be called the Jim Davidson Innuendo-laden Ego Trip, with added Blobby and games. I have little desire to watch Dog Eat Dog either, nor do I want to see vacant-brained divot flirtation on the pile of old dross that is Blind Date.

I'd like to see quality back on Saturday nights. I'd start by terminating Jim Davidson's contract immediately. The sooner we are rid of this pathetic insect the better.

Since the new Year, ITV have dealt BBC One a real bloody nose, they are beating the BBC on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday nights.

How many of these are people who can't be bothered to get off their backsides and do something more constructive?

Ha ha that'd be right Kat. The viewers start to desert the BBC in droves, and you suddenly go off the idea of watching TV altogether. Ha ha.

Altogether? Are you sure you've read my comment correctly? I only stated I do not watch on Saturday nights, that's hardly going off television completely, not watching one night out of seven...

BBC One have got some real ratings disasters on their hands at the moment. Clocking Off, The Generation Game, Playing the Field and even the BBC One Weakest Link was beaten by BBC2 last week. I could go on, I won't.

Erm, why post the same comment twice Square Eyes? Might I hasten to add that a drop in ratings for one single night hardly constitutes people leaving the BBC in droves, and a more global outlook is required.

The fact is, is that since ITV have comissioned a celebrity special, plus a second series, must suggest that ITV are lacking in ideas for innovative programming. We've been treated to the same shows year in, year out. Blind Date, Corrie, you've Been Framed, etc.. Who Wants to be a Millionaire has lost its edge since the first millionaire was created and there's only so much 'stars' programmes that can be made. We've had Popstars, Soap stars etc... all working to the same formulae. When ratings start to fall, they hark back to the good old days to try and get viewers back i.e. Bet Gilroy on Corrie, when Eastenders started to get more viewers and awards at various ceremonies, when they should be looking to fresh ideas. Would Shafted ever have been shown if The Weakest Link had not been created before it?

The fact of the matter is, is that the BBC is by far the more recognised one abroad. the World service is there for nearly everywhere on the globe, plus the better exports of programmes have been a product of the BBC. Monty Python's Flying Circus was a BBC production, as was Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served.

Even when ITV try to outdo the BBC by being innovative, they slip up. The Premiership and Survivor are outstanding examples. They blew a big fanfare for themselves when they got Formula One, but slipped up big style when they couldn't be bothered to do the first, and historic US Grand Prix from no place other than Indianapolis, properly, failing to broadcast a single minute of this landmark event live for all viewers, tape-delaying it to a time when most, particularly young fans would have been able to see it. Thank God Bernie Ecclestone is producing a vastly better interactive pay-per-view service I will willingly and unhesitatingly subscribe to!

Finally, it appears that as far as regional news is concerned in this area at least, people are COMING to the BBC in droves. Since Christa Ackroyd left Calendar, Calendar's ratings have taken a big plunge, unable to answer back to Look North. I believe the combination of Ackroyd/Gration will continue to rein in viewers from Calendar to Look North.

Sometimes, I wish people would be charitable enough to give the BBC the credit it rightly deserves.
