I was waiting for a car crash with Fearne Cotton and Adil Ray hosting, who with no disrespect are not the first people you would think of to host such a tribute/obit, but I thought they handled it pretty well. Helped by having excellent guests, of course - I'm sure Barry Cryer could have done an hour of anecdotes on his own.
Indeed. I wonder whether Fearne Cotton was there because of her connection to Bill Cotton (who was involved with The Two Ronnies show, of course)... probably a coincidence though.
Slightly awkward when Sir Bruce Forsyth stumbled over Adil's name.
Indeed, Fearne was announced as presenting the show yesterday, and as you say, she is a very distant relative of Bill.
I enjoyed it, I think Adil did a good job, a bit of a baptism of fire for a presenter, a bit like Richard Skinner having to do John Lennon's obit on his first Top of the Pops, but it helped that he is actually involved in comedy. I like how he wasn't introduced, actually, so I wonder if many people even knew who he was.
This has also shown again how valuable The One Show is for BBC1, in that you have half an hour of flexible live telly each day that can quickly react to the news and launch things and feel like the heart of the Beeb, a role that in the past was filled by Nationwide and Wogan.
An uncharacteristically nasty little piece from the Daily Mirror making a mountain out of a molehill over Fearne tripping up over her words in the intro
I wouldn't say it was a nasty piece but I do find it very strange for such an everyday hiccup the sort of hiccup that must happen several times a day across broadcast outlets everyday.
Had it been the Mail I'd agree, but I'm not sure that's the Mirror's usual style. That said, it's a good number of years since I read it with any regularity.
