According to the ITV News Channel, Phil just reported that Mr Morgan has stepped down. Phil seemed to have trouble reading the autocue aswell. Rolling Eyes

About bloody time too. I always thought that his confidence was a sign of his arrogance.

What do you think?

Looks like the Trinity Publishing group (owners of the Mirror) may have had something to do with the 'step-down'....

Press release to follow....

***********************************************************

The Daily Mirror published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.

However, there is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax.

The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the army in Iraq.

The paper will continue to co-operate fully with the investigation.

The board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect.

Des Kelly, Deputy Editor, will assume the role of acting editor.

I flipped onto the 6 on BBC1 just before the end and caught Sian breaking this and then flipped over to the headlines on ITV where they were still reporting that his resignation was being called for.

I guess it's awkward if it breaks just as the bulletin is about to go to air (are the ITV1 6.30 headlines pre-recorded?).

I don't believe a word of that. The very fact that the Mirror would accept such images without prior background checks is idiotic anyway.

The news channels seem pretty unaffected by it all...

The Sun has now withdrawn a £50,000 reward for information about the photographs in question..

Pretty inevitable but still a joyous moment. Can't wait to see the front page of the Sun tomorrow morning- and I don't say that very often!

But frankly it's not good enough from The Mirror. They truly have endangered the lives of British troops in Iraq. If there was any justice in this world, tomorrow's Mirror would have the entire front page with the words "WE LIED TO YOU" followed by a detailed apology in detail on pages 2,3,4,5,7,8 and 10- after all that's about the space they took up with their lies.

Nothing's ever their fault is it?

Dodgy way of quoting that, Katherine - that was Trinity Mirror Group saying that, not Paul.

Thing is, even if it was their fault, they're never going to actually admit it, are they?

Well, it is most embarrassing for the Mirror, who stood by their claims to the very end, coating their front pages with "WE TOLD THE TRUTH".

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, I think the Mirror have amputated a leg.

I know it was - sorry it didn't come across right!

Were not the Mirror suspicious that they were given these photographs only days after the American POW scandal had broken. Did they panic and buy the photos because they thought that they would be sold to one of their rivals?, or did their rabid anti-war,Bush & Blair stance cloud thair judgement. Looking at the photos, a schoolboy could tell that they were fake!.

Ah, 20/20 hindsight is such a great thing...
