What was the context in which they were mentioned?

In theatrical terms, an opener is what opens an act, and the play-off is the piece of music to which they take their bow and leave the stage.

Well in that case, there's no great mystery, is there? Surely it's self-evident what an "opener" is (the clue is in the word "opener"), and you should be able to make a fair stab at what a "play-off" is.
