It may be twice, I am sure when he returned in 1996 he was only a guest character with Madge, they left again a couple of months later to return to Queensland, only to return a few months after that. I may be wrong but I know Marlene was living in Harold and Madge's house in 1996 and she did not leave until 1997 when I believe they moved back.
Only once surely? When the last "send off" occurred 18 months or so ago it was planned from the start he'd return 3 months later

It's been a while since anything was posted on this thread (3 months!) but I've got a good reason
for bumping it back up the first page of the forum. According to PerfectBlend.net on 31st July:
We're a bit late reporting it, but couldn't let it pass without marking the occasion -
Friday July 17th saw Neighbours beat Home & Away in the Australian ratings,
with 998,000 to their 981,000, thanks in part to some dramatic scenes, but also
due to the huge success of Masterchef Australia, which had been boosting
the ratings of lead-in Neighbours for some weeks.
I wonder if Neighbours might hold on to its recently new found ratings lead for a bit longer,
or whether Home & Away could sneak past again after Masterchef Australia is finished.
