ITV is also looking to launch a new channel next year, which is likely to be called ITV4 and target women.

ITV director of digital channels Jonathan Lewis told Broadcast: "We are spending a lot of time looking at new channels and we may launch a new channel sometime next year. It could be called ITV4 because that would make sense."

No wonder ITV is going down the pan...

I suppose it makes more sense than the BBC launching BBC4, then BBC3!

That does make sense, why is that why ITV is going down the pan?

Personally, I don't see the problem with more channels as long as channels don't end up the same.

So ITV1 is a general mixed channel (though what would this be when everybody has digital, and can get every other channel?).
ITV2 could be aimed at entertainment, showbiz, films, comedy and comedy dramas.
ITV3 is a classic channel for dramas, soaps and films.
Where as ITV4 could work as a sort of Lifestyle channel (I wouldn't aim it at Women from the start as that would put men off from the start, which is something that they shouldn't do to make people feel excluded), and have the channel with lifestyle entertainment and programmes, a typical daytime like channel, similar to UKTVStyle with ITV's daytime chat shows included.

Who knows in a few years ITV may actually be a good network.
I still like the idea of a children's channel, though working on CiTV would have to work first. They could do it by creating revenue from products, i.e. creating toys and games, and having Press Red facilities for games and phone competitions, etc. rather than solely from advertising.

I think the point ndp was trying to make was that it was a ridiculous syllogism, a point which was so blindingly obvious that to state it merely made the locutor sound stupid.

I don't really understand your comments about a CITV channel; it's an idea that's been thrown about a lot before, but considering ITV is handing over responsibility for afternoon kids' programming to another network, I somehow doubt we'll be seeing a CITV channel anytime soon. Likewise your thoughts about interactive features seem equally ill-considered; they've shown no real commitment ITVi so far, though perhaps that may change under the forthcoming relaunch, I don't know.

There's a lot that's good about ITV - I for one love the excellent dramas ITV1 regularly features - but I still can't understand the logic for wanting to launch new channels when ITV1 isn't exactly bursting with new ideas. Yes, there's good drama, but the rest is pretty formulaic stuff, and most - with the exception of die-hard ITV supporters - would agree. There's plenty wrong with the BBC too, I don't doubt that (before people start having a go at me for being BBC brigade and an ITV basher), but that's not the point of this discussion.

Perhaps I'll be less sceptical once ITV3 has launched, and they've proved to me that they can successfully fill three channels. But at the moment, with a few choice exceptions there's so little between ITV1 and ITV2 beyond soaps, clips shows and reality programming that I'm a little wary of seeing a fourth channel added to the portfolio. ITV's talk of wanting to launch additional channels is becoming more frequent these days, and it seems to me that they simply want to be perceived as larger and more significant. The BBC has a burgeoning channel portfolio - with a potential "BBC Films" channel being suggested by the BBC brass today - and UKTV seems to expand every couple of months. It seems that as far as ITV is concerned, more channels is better. I'll just have to reserve judgement for the time being as to whether in ITV's case quantity is coming at the expense of quality.

Oops. Edited accordingly.

If ITV4 launched an "ITV4" channel, and is launched as a channel for women, then the tiresome re-runs of utter sh!te like
the seemingly perpetual loop of 1994-99 Jerry Springer Shows from can be moved there from ITV2. At least then, there
might actually be a chance of Letterman (an infinitely superior program) being shown in a decent timeslot.

While we're about it, the seemingly perpetual loop of 1990's Judge Judy episodes can be shunted to ITV4 as well!

Get your hands off Judy. She'll go where she likes.

Apparently they still make Judge Judy - pity they don't buy the rights, my grandmother loves the show - it's a good thing she can never remember the cases otherwise she'd probably have stopped watching long ago!

They can't even run the ITV1 properly, yet alone add another channel to the ITV family. Rolling Eyes
