I've just noticed the Ideal World shopping channel has appeared on Freeview Channel 22, where CBM once was.

Please Please Please someone tell me this is temporary. Not another shopping channel! Please!

EDIT: Looks unlikely that its temporary. Their website seems to think it's permanent!

I knew it would happen! Freeview just can't find anything decent to fill that last slot, so they've given it over to a shopping channel. I did think it would be Bid Up/Price Drop moving home though, or QVC moving there so it can cover Wales too.

I hope all the Freeviewers who oppose Top Up TV's existance are suitably happy with the next groundbreaking addition to DTT courtesy of their beloved totally free platform - after 18 months a tacky shopping channel is the only expansion Freeview has seen. Wow, isn't it great.

The channel name is still 'CH 22' atm.

Sorry to be gloating rather here, but that this has happened shows exactly why people who want a decent channel choice from DTT shouldn't be denied access to pay TV.

This is truly a great day in the annals of commercial television.

The addition of this superb shopping channel reflects the triumph of free market principles of laissez-faire free market capitalism.

All loyal citizens of Her Britannic Majesty's United Kingdom should be forever thankful that the enlightened administration under the leadership of the Dear Leader have stimulated economic conditions and formulated light touch regulation of the broadcast air waves such that viewers are no longer deprived of this service.

Ideal World now available on Freeview

On 23rd April 2004 Ideal World commenced broadcasting on Freeview, channel 22, in addition to broadcasting on Digital Satellite channel 635 and NTL 855. This is great news for the Company as it expands our audience by a further potential 3 million viewers and is a major coup to have been chosen, as there is a restricted number of channels. Ideal World now broadcasts on all the digital platforms which means that whichever broadcast platform viewers choose, they will be able to access Ideal World and when the current analogue signal is switched off (currently predicted as 2010) we will be available to the whole of the UK's 26 million households.

Anybody who is critical of this triumph of consumer-capitalism is obviously a communist or a crypto-Marxist, and is in need of treatment at a privately run institution for mental health care.

Freeview can be disapointing at times - especially during the day when ITV2 is the only real addition for the adult viewer as the news channels are usually covering the same stories / press conferences.

What it desperately needs is more channels with general appeal - certainly to rival ITV2 in the day and add to the collection at night. I think Sky Travel should become a kind of Sky Showcase, showing archive Sky One programming plus stuff from Sky Sports, Sky Movies and Sky News (such as magazine programmes etc). I'd also suggest dumping UKTV Bright Ideas in favour of 24 hours of Ftn, with stuff from Challenge, Trouble and Living making up the daytime schedule. Also, eventually More4 will be a welcome addition to the line-up, while ITV3 may be added later this year. (I can't see it being Sky only with the name ITV3 (think they would distinguish it if it was a package channel and also as it's aimed at older viewers, it would probably do quite well on Freeview).

As for the shopping channels - do they ever actually sell anything? A good 4 channels being used up, which would be better served for scheduled channels or as extra Interactive streams available to the terrestrial broadcasters.

Also, any more news on the CBM channel and the FreeSport channel that were both intended for Freeview.
