I was just wondering, how flexible are ITV (for example) in a situation where a newscaster wants a holiday.? I mean, I'm a student, but last year was on placement in a commercial environment, which gave me 21 days paid holiday in the year... When I wanted my holiday, I could take it.
I assume this is the same situation as our newscasters, getting a certain amount of holiday a year. But can a news presenter like Mary Nightingale just walk up to David Mannion and say, "can I book 2 weeks off on this date to this date"?
Or are they contractually obliged to take their holidays during the "quiet" news periods of the year when there is no royal birthday, no D-Day services, no important European events, sports events etc?
I say this because it was odd that a few weeks back, MOST of ITV's main core presenting team seemed to be absent, including people like the Political Editor Nick Robinson. Causing some crazy combinations on the evening news. Do you think they are encouraged to book around the same time, or indeed, completely different times?
