Considering most of us use EPG's to navigate the channels - so we really need idents to identify the channel...?

Media Guardian posted:
Channel Five is to launch a new set of onscreen idents on Monday based on emotions, one of which features an image of sperm inspired by love.
The idents do not feature the broadcaster's logo, but instead use images inspired by the words live, fast, hope, risk, dare, play, free, rush and life, as well as love.

Each word appears in the familiar location of the Five logo in the onscreen idents, on the left-hand side of the screen in the channel's established typographical style.

The word fast features in a shot of greyhounds racing, rush appears on the ground below a sky diver and live can be traced in the outline of forked lightning.

The Five director of marketing, Jane Scott, who joined the broadcaster from the BBC in June last year, initiated the rebranding and the new idents were commissioned by the head of creative services, Nol Davis.

"This is a confident evolution of Five's already strong on-air image. It represents much more than a corporate logo, it is a living and breathing embodiment of everything the channel stands for," Mr Davis said.

The idents were created by branding agency BB/Saunders and shot in Prague and the UK through Hungry Man, with post production by Finish and 3D work by Realise. Samuel Christopher directed, with Matt Jones producing. The music is by Tanuki 8.

I've got to say that this rebrand sounds awful, especially with the sperm ident on TV. I doubt many people would want to see sperm flying around on screen whilst they're eating their dinner or with children present who haven't learnt the facts of life yet in great detail - "mummy, what's that? *points to TV and C5 ident*".

To be fair that is the sort of thing that will just go over children's heads if they don't know what it is. They will just see it as white blobs moving around.

I'm quite a fan of the current five idents, but the change certainly seems intriguing .

five are trying to be as innovative as C4, and it might not work. They do have a fairly strong on-screen brand, and it might be better just to use the new idents for particular strands rather than all the time.

will we get some new graphics on the end caps as well and maybe something new at the end of their adverts...that powerpoint five should have gone years ago

Why, five, why?

I've noticed five have spent a lot of money and effort on their advertising recently, with the great 'This is what I know' TV trailers. I've also seen two adverts on bus stops in recent weeks, for Prison Break. This is exactly what five needs - it has so many great shows such as House and CSI that it deserves some higher ratings and attention for once.

I was hoping they would acompany the extra advertising push with a revamp to their presentation, as although their current set of idents are nice, they look dated compared to the new trailers. However, at least from the look of the sperm ident, this doesn't look like it's going to be much of a success.

As someone stated earlier, five isn't well known enough, and doesn't have a strong enough of a brand identity, to get rid of its logo on the idents. The new idents sound like they would have been perfect, if only they displayed the word 'five' instead of flashy buzz words which will mean nothing to the viewers.

Also, come on, sperm in idents? Five is meant to be trying to establish itself as a channel of great dramas, and get away from the sleazy brand it used to have. This really isn't the best way to do it. Ok, it's one of many new idents (and probably won't last long), but there must have been better ways of going about it.

It's been a long time since I've made a mock (it's been just as long since I've even made a post on here), and I think this might inspire me to go off and come up with something better.

The sperm ident does look quite effective but I'm sure there will be many comments criticising it and I do suppose that it will have to be aired later on at night.
Perhaps if the ident said 'five' first then changed into 'love' it would look better.

I think you've struck the nail on the head with that. It's the classic controversial route to publicity. Although I'm not so sure it will work, I think idents go over most viewers heads thesedays and I doubt many people will notice if the logo is there or not. They'll still know its channel 5 as it's button 5 or the fifth place on the EPG at least.

I'm not entirely sure its the best thing they could do for their brand.

I think everyone probably felt the same when they heard of new idents expressing "emotions".

Interesting, though nothing to get exited about. Dropping the logo seems strange, but notice each logo has at least one letter from "five".

Dropping the logo is more than strange, it's a no-no. The whole point of TV idents is to IDENTIFY the channel - something these don't!

I like the new branding, however Five seem to re-brand their channel every couple of years, much more than any other broadcaster.
