A surprising move!

That leaves Sky without a few HD channels now, such as ITVBe HD and 4Seven HD as well as Eden HD

Sky are missing quite a few HD channels, like Discovery Science HD

The playout chain for Disco Science UK is still standard def

The rumour is that Sky wanted a HD UKTV channel in Gold's EPG position as the majority at the top are HD swapped. Instead of Gold being shunted down the EPG, they're replacing Eden HD with Gold HD.

Considering Eden is one of the lesser watched UKTV channels it makes sense. I’d welcome Gold HD anyway as they have a fair amount of new material original and recent BBC.

Frankly I'm surprised that HD is still considered a luxury with only a tiny proportion of channels having a simulcast given broadcasts been regularly transmitting for over a decade now.

UKTV only went widescreen in 2008, ten years after digital TV started so they’ve improved vastly on the HD front!

Yes - a lightly compressed IMX50 or DigiBeta quality SD master, unconverted to 1080i by a broadcast quality up converter, and then H264 compressed at a decent bitrate will look HUGELY better than the same master, compressed horribly to SD MPEG2 at a miserable bitrate, then unconverted by the consumer upscaler in your TV.

Just compare BBC Four TOTP repeats on BBC Four HD, with those on BBC Four SD, on the same TV...

Surely it's up to UKTV which channels they broadcast in HD, and where they place them on the EPG. I'm sure it's very nice for Sky to have lots of HD channels at the top of their EPG, but frankly most of them are none of their business.

I must say that actually, I don't care and have never watched or even heard of any of the channels mentioned. However, as a consumer and Sky HD+ subscriber, I'm actually furious that something is available in the UK market in HD but not to me as a premium Sky subscriber.

Possibly Sky will hear this. I doubt it but, let's try: The Sky World HD premium subscription is taken on the assumption that nothing in the UK market will ever surpass it.

If this is not the case then Netflix, Amazon and Tacolneston off-air will do. Sorry Rupe..... Oh, and you know that BT Sport does better rugby coverage then Sky?

If it gets the League, I'm switching to BT.

With the prospect of Gold going HD on Sky, I hope NOW TV upgrade the stream and VOD to 720p.

I would like to see that happen, but I can’t guarantee that NOW TV will increase the resolution and bitrates for GOLD, just because it is getting an HD version.

Comedy Central, Discovery, MTV, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, among others, still are capped at SD resolution, even though they have HD versions.

However, there’s a much bigger chance of the Box Set content being upgraded to 720p. I’d still prefer for the streams to be upgraded to 50Hz, some genres of programmes feel very jarring at half the refresh rate, especially sport.
