Granada Ident from the mid 80s is causing some problems:

When was this last used as ident?

It was certainly still being used as an endcap in 1988 as it appears on episodes of The Krypton Factor from that year (and possibly carried on until September 1989 when the corporate look was introduced - I've never seen anything intermediate between the blue slide and the 'for ITV' caption?).

Possibly it did survive as an ident this long too? I know there are various other idents around from the mid-late 80's such as the animated blue/gold ones, the 'clouds' one, the silver slide etc but I'm sure I've read accounts that Granada went through several rounds of introducing more modern presentation around this time which were all short-lived as the dreaded blue slide kept on coming back.

Oh dear, so it must have been a bit of a mess, thanks for the information.

I'm quite sure that blue one was used as a froncap until frontcaps were discontinued and as an end cap until the new ITV corporate look of 1989. Granada had various idents in the late eightties and they changed periodically but these were only used for continuity and so only seen within the Granada region. I don't think the blue one was used at all for this purpose past 1986 but I could be wrong. Youtube, TV Ark and the like do suggest that it was relegated to frontcap/endcap only by then.

There was, I believe, an Autumn(?) seasonal ident along similar lines... Looking at it now, I couldn't tell whether this is connected or just has a similar graphical style... So it could be another sequence from the same year; I'll try and look into this if I can.

It seems the Channel 3 branding was gone before 8th March 1998:

From February 1998 go to 2m:

Unless the evening version was introduced before it was dropped?

Hi 623508 and Paul. The ident voiced by Christina Mcintyre ran from August 31st - December 14th 1990. Then the Christmas ident took over which was of two angels (one with a red nose and one with a green nose) flying round a Christmas Tree along with a nice christmas jingle.

Hope this helps.

My initial thought was 1990 for that seasonal symbol - vaguely recalled it airing in October, just didn't know exactly how long it ran for - so it's nice to have that confirmed.

I know exactly the one (along with the 'Scottish New Year' that followed) - yes, 1990 into the start of '91... Perhaps I should have mentioned it earlier! It was a rather nice jingle; I quite like the extended variation that was used on some of the promo trails as well.

Agreed. My favourite Scottish TV Christmas ident yet I have not come across it for my channel yet. I live in hope! Smile
