The news we've all been waiting for - The Crystal Maze is returning to C4 in October.

OK, it's only a celebrity special for Stand up to Cancer, and I'd imagine it's filmed at the experience, but it's looking promising that a full series will follow. David Tennant is being tipped to host, and that would be quite a good choice IMO.

CLASSIC TV game show The Crystal Maze is returning after 21 years.

The problem-solving favourite, which ran from 1990 to 1995, will be revived for a big-budget celebrity special on Channel 4 in October.

A full series will follow if it is a ratings success.

Bosses hope to lure former Doctor Who David Tennant, 45, as host, following in the footsteps of Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien, 74, and Ed Tudor-Pole, 60.

A TV insider said: “Even two decades after it last aired, there are very few shows that have been as magical and action-packed as The Crystal Maze. It is still remembered extremely fondly today.

Who's that then . . . former Dr Who star David Tennant is being lined up to host show

“Channel 4 are hoping to tap into that nostalgia and believe viewers will jump at the chance to finally take on the show’s adventurous challenges themselves.”

At its height, The Crystal Maze was the most popular programme on Channel 4, regularly drawing in between four and six million viewers.

O’Brien presented it from its launch until 1993 when punk rocker Tudor-Pole took over.

If the ratings are high enough, bosses hope to make a new full series of the problem solving show

Contestants raced in teams against the clock around themed zones where they competed in tense challenges

Teams of competitors raced around the largest set on TV, visiting elaborately-themed time and space zones to take part in tense challenges and win crystals.

The celebrity special will air during Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer charity programming.

I love this. I saw it for the first time when it was mentioned on here a little while ago and it is so good - at the time someone also mentioned Dick and Dom in da bungalow's 'The Crystal Muck', which is also surprisingly funny in terms of the references it makes to the show. Certainly a lot more for adults in there than you'd expect! The children (somewhat understandably) don't understand what's going on at all, but the adults present are clearly loving it.

Very pleased to hear the show itself is coming back.

If it is a ratings success and they bring it back full time will they end up using the experience set (which surely won't look great for TV and is fully booked until March 2017 and that will likely only increase) or would they build a brand new set do you think...?

Heh, Richard O'Brien and Ed Tudor Pole were always a bit Doctorish in their personas as the show's presenter, so I can't blame them for wanting an actual former Doctor Who star to be the new host. If indeed the bit about David Tennant is true.

I never got into Da Bungalow as a twenty something adult, but wish I did after that wonderful piece of kids tv.

David Tennant would be a great shout. It's quite a challenging gig, combining character acting, scripted presenting and bring able to ad-lib in character.

So other than Tennant, I reckon Tony Robinson could be a good outside chance - the spoof in Maid Marian which he wrote was clearly done from a position of great affection for the show and was really well observed. He's already part of the C4 family, if that counts for much, and a great character actor and comedy writer with proven presenting skills.

David Tennant proved he would be a great host when he hosted the Doctor Who special edition of Never Mind The Buzzcocks. His facial expressions alone were comedy gold. I definitely think he could be a great host.
