What I've never understood about the Olympics 2000 ident is that other computer generated balloon idents, like the ones at The Needles and Blackpool Tower, look totally convincing even today. Why such a botch job for the Sydney ident?

Maybe because it wasn't going to be onscreen for long, so no much efort needed to be put into it. (Lazy bits of carpet fluff).

Yet, you could apply that to a number of other balloon idents that were made for a single occasion or special programme. So really it's not like there's any reason to explain the lack of polish, other than being very rushed for time!

BBC Two just used a new graphic promoting its website, during the end credits of The Apprentice. It used the same half-screen style as the ECP, but the bottom half featured an animation using the bird-esque '2's from the website. It sort of fluttered around the BBC Two logo, settling on top of it. In the background was a row of houses. It looked quite good.

It seems unusual that all this effort on new graphics has been made solely for the website. Unless they are trying to make the website into its own seperate brand?

It's a nice little touch. I was surprised when I saw it during the end credits, as I never expected the bird 2 to be used on-screen at all, particularly as it wouldn't fit with the yellow scheme. But, that was before I knew they'd dug out Xmas 2000 pres for use. So little trace of the plain look now (bar a wrong ID selection or 2 night etc promos) that it just seems bizarre.

Would it not be fair to assume, given the revamp in the website and the removal of almost any trace of the yellow, that BBC2 will be given a bit of a facelift after the Olympics? That's certainly how it's looking.

I just hope they ditch the bland trailer style!

I've heard nothing about a revamp, so I'm not expecting anything huge. But here's my take on it all:

The standard yellow idents have still been played recently, albeit due to human error;

The '2 night' / '2 suggests' lot are still around also, so unless that's down to an error once again, the fact it has still been shown hints it won't be done away with just yet.

Looking forward:

For a moment - let's just say they were to scrap the yellow and introduce something new at the start of next week - what are the chances of it being far from a facelift to something that's just as samey or even worse than the yellow package?

Whenever they do prepare for a rebrand, I'll be eager with anticipation no doubt, but not expecting something vastly improved. I'm just hoping with the resurgence of the Xmas 2000 ID, someone has seen it and appreciated how much greater the old style was. It would allow for much diversity, which I feel the yellow set lacks overall despite being far better than BBC ONE IMO.

The nostalgist in me just wants pres to follow suit from the Olympics choice and start re-instating the legendary idents and stings from the last decade or so, brandishing the current logo. That will never happen though, so I just hope the next era is a far more creative one pres-wise, that gets our attention more.
