The lack of communication from the Beeb is surprising considering the detail they went to describing the HD swaps of the other channels, and even why they couldn't swap BBC News until after Christmas.

I wonder if this is an experiment to see if people will prefer having the HD channel on 101 and only switching for the regional news, or if there will be complaints and just to keep the regular channel on 101 until HD regional variants launch.

I'm pretty confident the BBC1 swaps for England won't be happening (until there are truly regional HD versions of BBC 1 available), and whoever wrote that BBC web page has got the wrong end of the stick.

In fact I'm not even sure anything will change tomorrow for FreeSat, only Sky.

I am very surprised at the statement implying the 101/141 swap, and predict that if this does happen, there'll be a shed load of confused regional news watchers come 6:30pm Monday (the regional news magazines still pulling in substantial numbers of viewers).

Presumably there'll be caption on 101, saying retune to 141 etc for your local news, it's hardly confusing for those with more than half a brain cell Very Happy . Perhaps BBC 1 SD will take 141 on Freesat too, to unify things, I'm sure BET+1 can be shifted into further obscurity. I don't actually think BBC 1 English regions will move though, it's all just too good to be true.

Hardly confusing? Tell that to those viewers who don't seem to be able to switch to BBC Two during Wimbledon... Very Happy

Razz I know where you're coming from, but why worry about them ? And indeed why worry that if you leave a 'national event' on BBC 2, some people won't find it ? The argument can turn on itself !

I do wonder what the purpose of offering the SD version of a channel on an HD box is (channels with regional variations excepted, and possibly PSBs with arcane rules to deal with). Does anybody who pays for HD really ever use the SD version? To my mind they just clog up the EPG.

They're a good way of saving space if you have a lot of recordings stored on your Sky+ box, especially if the recorded content is SD!

Personally I watch a lot of SD versions of programmes, especially if recording as they take up less space on the hard drive. And of course only SD can switch the size of older 4:3 programmes into widescreen, which HD just gets ghastly black lines down the sides.
So I'd be pretty annoyed if they took away the SD variants myself.

You mean DISTORT the original 4:3 image, by stretching it to fill the fill the screen ?
HTF is that a Good Thing !!!

So if a programme like Murder She Wrote is in 16:9 pillarbox but in HD (scanned from film), you'd watch ITV SD just to fill your screen? Nice.

I have to admit I switch over to the SD version I get worried about screen burn and I can't afford to fix my 42 inch telly.

Have you any evidence that your screen is susceptible to screen burn ? News channel tickers are just as likely
to be an issue, presumably they've caused no problems ?

So today on Freesat in England BBC 2, 3 & 4 have swapped with their HD counterparts.

BBC One remains the same, however the regional HD variants have been added at:
972 BBC One HD
973 BBC 1 Scot HD
976 BBC 1 Wales HD
978 BBC1 NI HD

EDIT: BBC News HD has swapped too.

The HD versions of BBC One Scotland/Wales/NI have appeared at 977/8/9 in the Sky EPG, but there has been no HD swap with 101 in England.
