i haven't been drinking tonight, so i don't think im imagining this.

im a regular sign zone viewer cos im a lazy student who gets up at midday, so i know this isn't usual.

you can hear, what sounds like pres gallery chatter faintly over the top of the programme audio. an irish sounding lady chit chatting. its impossible to hear properly what shes saying - but shes gone on about "16:9" "14:9" "subtitles" "digital widescreen" "cut to symbol"

and during the junction after see hear, she could quite clearly be heard counting down into the ident, then counting down again into the following programme.

is the the channel director? channel PA? (does such a thing exist?) or one of the voices in my head? and i always thought the sign zone was automated Confused

There is some interference, I'll be waiting until the junction to see if there's any gallery talkback which does seem to be what you were talking about.

EDIT: 0320 junction rolled around, seems that the interference had cleared up by then.

A 'blink-and-you-miss-it' affair I suppose though I may as well ask what platform you were viewing on.

There is no PA. In fact in the Nations' there is just one person doing the lot.

The sign zone is no more automated than any other part of BBC ONE's output. The announcements are generally pre-recorded at that time of night but there is always a director there.

Well, if nobody else is going to say it, I'll be brave!

At least it wouldn't have spoiled it for the people the programme was intended for. The deaf wouldn't have heard it!

for the record i was watching on DTT

well it turns out that the voices were infact those of the network director and a trainee - which would explain the " ... all you need to do is remember to ..." and the (what sounded like) pointing out the tx monitors etc. oh and the lady was scottish rather than irish.

and a potential explanation, suggested by an incredibly clever in the know person who shall remain nameless is that ...

the mic fader could have been open in the con booth and the headphones turned up, then if the con fader was opened you could, possibly, hear talkback.

Sounds more like the crate for the TX220 sidecar mixer crashed, putting the Con C reserve mic to air without muting the speaker in the con booth which carries the director's talkback. Not the first time it's happened Smile
