CHANNEL 4 is planning to launch a number of new digital channels. Announcements are expected later this year and genres such as music, factual and comedy are under consideration.

Rob Woodward, commercial director of Channel 4, said it had not been decided whether the new channels would be free-to-air or on subscription.

He confirmed, however, that the commercial broadcaster would launch More 4, an advertising-financed channel, early next year. Aimed at older ABC1 viewers rather than the mainstream Channel 4 audience, it will be carried on Freeview, the digital terrestrial service, as well as satellite TV.

I wonder if the new channels will have a massive impact on Discovery Home & Leisure. A lot of its programmes seem to be Channel 4 lifestyle shows.

I suppose in a way they could try out a T4 channel, aimed at teenagers, there's only really Trouble that covers it, though then e4 is a sort of t4, well it used to be.

a 4music channel sounds interesting as there 4 music section is great. Hopefully if they did launch this, then it wouldn't just be a select a video station (it may start out like the old MTV!).

Pretty catchy names...and the 4 prefix gives brand uniformity.

Anyone else thinking maybe this may be one of the reasons they're holding out on relaunching Channel 4 for the time being - so as to relaunch completely with the new channels?

So instead of going along with the current word/letter 4 of naming channels, they are going for a 4 prefix. Does this then mean that they may rearrange current channels, so that e4 becomes 4entertainment, film four becomes 4film/4movies, and the new channel will be called 4more?

Maybe all the channels would then get similar logos, as at the moment not one is the same.
Though Film Four and E4 are both strong brands.

Even though the channels may be struggling at the moment, they are still strong brands in the fact that many know of them, even non digital TV subscribers/owners know of them (well some of them).

E4 could do with looking over the history of channel 4 and it's take of new, original and risk taking entertainment commissions, and putting that into the channel, and improving. A bit like itv2's slogan, they could offer a flipside to channel 4.
Providing an alternative daytime schedule, perhaps an alernative breakfast show and new and imported comedies and new entertainment chat shows.

SO that the emphasis isn't on the age group, more that it's on being entertaining.
