The BBC are trying out higher definition setups with the 2012 Olympics, but the footage wont be broadcast... given the resolution of the next step up, such pictures wouldn't be noticeable on tellies lower than 100 inches anyway!

'in widescreen' (was that actually used?)

Channel 4 used it for their cricket coverage, displaying on the title card "Available in Widescreen on All Digital Services". This was used from 2002 until the coverage stopped in 2005 (the cap below is from their final ever Test Match broadcast).

Sky have flexibility in their EPG system to remap channels - as do Freesat - as both can map the regional ITV1 and BBC One variants, the national BBC Two variants (and on Sky the correct advert regions in the case of C4 - not sure about Five)

So Sky could have mapped BBC One HD to 101 and ITV1 HD to 103. However because of the lack of regional variations, and possibly an extra EPG management cost (I imagine HD could be added as a separate "region" as a simplistic way of doing it)

I believe Sky are currently asking broadcasters on their views to do just that from the new year. I believe that plan is that the HD and SD channels will swap places for HD Pack subscribers, so for example Channel 4 HD will be on 104 and Channel 4 will be on 140.

I guess the issue for the BBC and ITV on Sky will be local news/advertisting regionality on HD vs SD.

Would it be possible - thinking more of BBC1 english regional news than BBC Scotland/Wales/NI or ads on the commercial channels - to redirect viewers to an SD feed for the duration of an opt-out?

I've read that on Digital Spy too, but I've not been able to find a credible source to verify it as yet. I hope it is true though, as it would make a lot of sense.

When BBC One and BBC Two had separate continuity for their Digital services the announcer would often say "In Widescreen on BBC One, it's...."

Not seamlessly as you'd have to force a receiver re-tune and that might trigger a resolution change on your receiver output - both of which would punch a hole in your viewing. That would be far from nice viewing.
