The BBC has announced its election special:
Quote:
On the Friday 4 May [sic] 2006 23 million voters across England decide who is going to represent them in local councils for the next four years.

David Dimbleby leads the BBC team reporting live as the results come in with instant reaction from the winners and losers.

Emily Maitlis reports from the biggest battleground of the night - in London - and there will be a complete picture of the story across the country at 12.15am and 1.30am.

It's a crucial night for Tony Blair and for the new leaders David Cameron and Menzies Campbell as they face their first electoral test.

Jeremy Vine makes his debut as the master of virtual reality graphics - pulling together what is happening and what it means for the country as a whole.

The BBC's Political Editor Nick Robinson will be on hand to tell us what the politicians are saying and planning behind the scenes.

Coverage of the elections can be seen on BBC ONE and News 24, Friday 5 May 2006, 11.30pm–6.00am.

Obviously Sky News will have a special; anyone know if ITV's doing anything this year?

What will people be watching (if any of it)?

I'll be watching BBC, although I'll be dipping in and out of Sky News to see what they do. How will they cope with out Julie? Could this see the return of Jeremy or even, in a moment of desperation Kay? Does anybody remember when she presented the 1997 election with Laurie Mayor (sp?)

On BBC ONE Northern Ireland you'll get a film instead.

Be first with the results!

Watch the BBC and see the results the night before you vote!

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first time for at least a while that the local election night programme on the BBC is going through till 6.00am. Usually they shut up shop at around 3.00am or 4.00am.

I think ITV usually just have a regional 30-minute programme around midnight or something.

I assume the BBC programme airs on BBC Scotland and BBC Wales as well.

Glad to see David Dimbleby is the presenter once again - he's by far the best at this sort of programming. Given that he's 67 now, I wonder how long he's thinking of going on for.

I know what you mean but somewhat bizarrely, at the BBC, each day starts at 6am not midnight. Thus this particular programme has an on-air time of 2415 on the 4th May not 0015 on 5th. Maybe some confusion arose from this oddity when the Press Office were typing up that release.

If there's a schedule change for something in the middle of the night, it can sometimes be a bit daunting to work out that a programme starting at 29:25:00 on the 15th is the one starting at 5.25am on the 16th!!!

I suppose it's a hangover from when telly closed down overnight. A day's programmes didn't generally start before 6am so that was the start of the BBC day. But as it wouldn't have been sensible to bill a late film in the next day's page of the Radio Times, this strange system came into being.

I doubt it will air in Scotland - we have local elections at different times to those in England and Wales.

Nothing on ITV1 by the looks of it. Just The Mint as usual.

I can't remember whether they did anything four years ago for the last equivalent local elections.

They certainly had an ITV1 special for the European elections and London mayoral elections in 2004.

The May Local Elections are in England only I believe, so BBC in Scotland, Wales and N Ireland will have their own programming no doubt.

Nothing on ITV, or anything else for that matter; Sky News have usual programming listed.
