Pope John Paul was greeted by tens of thousands of pilgrims as he arrived at a shrine on Italy's Adriatic coast to beatify three future saints.
Beatification is the last stage before full sainthood.

The three were all members of Catholic Action, a lay Catholic movement which tries to bring a religious dimension into politics.

-- has Guto changed roles?

Seems a bit of a strange assignment for a Political Reporter

He's on a six-month assignment/secondment in Rome.

Also, I read somewhere that Brian Barron's stint in Rome is coming to an end and he is moving to New York with a roving brief.

That's right. As far as I can make out, Brian Baron is moving simply because he wanted to live in New York again.

There'll be more BBC correspondents in NYC than anywhere else in the world at this rate. Jeremy Cooke is the official correspondent there, and there's Suzannah Price at the UN. But in the recent past, both Emma Simpson and Laura Trevellyan have moved there for family reasons, and continue to freelance for the BBC.

The irony there being that no other British TV news organisation actually has ONE correspondent between them in the city.

And I didn't even mention the World Business Report people.

Didn't know that Laura had moved - is it permanent? I always liked her as a political correspndant

Yeah Guto is in Rome for at least six months - this was discussed a while ago when the Chief Political Correspondent job for News 24 was advertised.
And as has been said the BBC has quite a few correspondents/freelance correspondents in New York ... add Jane O'Brien to that list and BBC Three's Manoush Zomorodi ... and Tom Brook for Talking Movies ... plus the business team including Tanya, Kate and Stephen Evans.

So when will the new chief political correspondent for N24 be announced?

I heard a whisper today linking The Sun's George Pascoe-Watson with the job.

And what will Guto do after his Rome assignment? It seems that a (long term) return to Westminster reporting is far from inevitable.

I think he is returning to Westminster after his stint in Rome, as he said on The Daily Politics on one of his last appearances on it that he would be back "for the election".

James Landale is the new Chief Political Correspondent for News 24, I don't know whether this is just in the interim until Guto Harri returns, or its permanent.

Apparently his bosses didn't want him to go on this Rome jaunt until after the election, but he chose to go away in the run-up to the election instead, which is why his chief political correspondent job was re-advertised.

Is she back with the BBC, Nicky?

I thought she quit after the war to go and marry a yank ( well, if you believe the Sunday tabloids she did).

And I certainly haven't seen or heard her on screen for quite a while.

What about Jenny Scott?

I haven't seen her on BBC News for ages?

Has she locked herself in the toilet? Has she left? Or is she on maternity?
