Central News now in widescreen

As the title says, Central News (West) appears to be in widescreen from today.

Don't know if it's a 14:9 crop or proper widescreen, but they had a few problems with their headline on the Lunchtime News.

Granada and ITV Wales still 4:3, as is the national news - but it's a start!

Brilliant News. From what I seen in GMTV there are slight black bars down the side, but only small. Wonder why they dont have widescreen cameras? To say they had new ones with the new set, and a recent upgrade.

sounds like a temporary problem - as they were back to 4:3 for the 5.30 promo.

edit: looking at the online streaming, which has been 4:3 all day, i guess it could be a problem in leeds

Having seen HTV West and Anglia be reverted from 16:9 back to 4:3 by order of Das Management, I can't see any of the regions being allowed to go widescreen until the great Gods at ITN do.

Just what does DAS have to do with this?

Which sounds like a bit of a chicken and egg situation to me...!

Was back to 4:3 for the 6pm edition - but they attempted some sort of widescreen at 12.30pm and 3pm - though it looked more cropped than letterboxed!

Yep - though both were the "analogue BBC English region" compromise of 4:3 studio zoomed to 16:9 via 14:9 pillarbox, so a bit soft and mushy on 16:9 sets.

It was cropped on the pre citv bulletin, went back to 4:3 during the weather though.

It seems logical for them to go widescreen during GMTV IMO, but why wait so long ?

If you look at the weather, it is actually w/s with a thin black line down the side and not 4:3 cropped. I say this because the ITV Central Weather dog lines up correctley like the ITV National Weather. If it was 4:3 cropped, then ITV Central logo would be off the screen, also the GMTV weather sponsorship is in 4:3 widescreen.

So during one bulletins it looks like:

4:3 cropped to 16:9 (Main Central News)
4:3 in 16:9 frame (Weather Sponsorship)
16:9 with 14:9 frame (Weather)
