19 minutes in, and I appear to be the first to post the news ?

(Changes channel...) So it is! Didn't see that coming given the excuses we've heard from ITN in the past. I wonder if ITV News will follow soon but is taking longer than Channel 4 as they're waiting to have upgraded all the regions first?

I was just about to post that I noticed the animation on the stings were smoother...now I know why!

ITV News has full 16:9 playout capabilities, as seen on the 'Coming Up at 10:30' promos which are 16:9. It's just the waiting for certain regions *cough*Channel*cough* that is letting the others down.

But Channel don't show anything in widescreen anyway. It's all 14:9 on there (D-Sat and analogue), so what's the problem ?

Did we completly miss it on the News at Noon as well then?

According to the C4 blogs, the rest of ITN are staying in their "square box":

Quote:
Of course we live in a commercial world and the main reason for the change is that our customers want widescreen. The real problem for Channel 4 News is that only we are converting - the rest of ITN is still constrained in the box.

You didn't spot this, then, over in the ITV News thread on 9th January?

No one seems to have mentioned the little piece in todays media guardian about ITN news crews having to start a report by filming a tennis ball for 15 seconds so that they know if their report is being filmed in 4:3 to be cropped or on their new 16:9 kit.

Could this mean a change to proper widescreen soon? If so, it's about time.

Surely the studio is already capable as shown on the pre advert previews.

yes but that was in the ITV News thread - most people expected ITN to go widescreen on ITV first, rather than Channel 4.

Well ITN has gone 16:9 with ITV News as I said above, it just ITV are cropping it, as they do with the regions too (yet many of the regions feed the regional news to ITV in 16:9). Just watch the aformentioned 'Coming Up at 10:30' promos (usually on at the end of the ad break 15 mins before) and you can clearly notice the sharper 16:9 picture, that and the graphic doesn't sit on the bottom of the screen.
