Shocker on Newswatch tonight as the BBC News person actually thanked Newswatch viewers for their opinions, said she wanted to learn from them and almost / kind of / actually admitted they do step over the mark sometimes!! (She was the boss of visual graphic journalism.. talking about gratuitous use of graphics on BBC News)

It's a good job she doesn't work for Sky News then as in terms of Gratuitous use of Graphics the BBC is a Hamster compared to the T-Rex of Sky News, In fact other than Channel Four News the BBC probably has the most mild use of Graphics. The BBC's and C4's are simple Boxes which Wipe on an off and have a single colour text on a Single Colour Background. Not like ITV's which has a completely unnecessary wipe or Sky's which are the Polar opposite of C4's Graphics. Is bevelling, adding gradients, a stupid flash and wipe effect with a whoosh noise actually needed to show somebodies name. Sky makes the American News Network's look tame presentation wise.

I actually did not see anything wrong with the BBC's Graphics, It just seemed that arrogant viewers wanted something else to complain about. The Treasury Box image I thought was a bit over the top, but I thought the rest seemed to be quite trendy and modern and in keeping with what I want to see on a news channel. In the end it just seemed like they were against any modern changes to the BBC. For 50p a Day? I think some of these viewers need to get a grip.

Edit: I think it is 25p a day

Sorry, but in terms of intrusive graphics all UK news outlets are kinda tame. One only has to venture as far as Australian commercial news, where 'live' bumpers/transitions and some breaking news strap animations have whooshing/exploding sound effects. We've also developed a tendency for having big logos animating in the bottom corner of screens continuously (go to Youtube and search for 'Nine News Now'), and unnecessary graphics cluttering all corners of the screen (Sky News Australia at one stage had a box in each corner of the screen for a breaking news story).

In comparison, ITV News and Sky News' graphics are quite elegant.

To be honest though, Newswatch isn't the most serious of complaints programme - I'm glad that Samira Ahmed took over from Snoddy last year because she treats some of the 'complaints' with the contempt they deserve! Saying that, I do think it's stepped up since Ahmed took over - one thing that stands out to me was the interview with Andrew Neil after he interviewed Alex Jones on the Sunday Politics, where she actually grilled him over whether it was the right decision, whereas Snoddy would have probably skirted around the actual question and given him a much easier time.
