I cannot understand why this mock only has 2 stars! I love it its a massive improvement on the current graphics which reminds me of that god awful stripy wallpaper on daybreak.
I think it maybe because there are basically 5 Criteria for mocks.
1 - Skill: Simple how skilful is it?
It doesn't take more than 15 minutes to put some rectangles and some text in those rectangles in PowerPoint.
2 - Safezones: Does everything fit in the safe zones?
Yes they do.
3 - Looks good: Does it actually look good?
It's easy on the eye but wouldn't be at all recognisable really - bland is a word I'd use.
4 - Brand Inkeeping: If it is adding to an already existing brand is it inkeeping with that brands style?
No, all BBC National News Productions use a form of Helvetica (except Daily/Sunday Politics which uses Gill Sans as the new graphics were introduced only months before the NBH move and will probably move into Helvetica soon). Have you made sure that the BBC News bar (That line with the Ticker on it) would fit on top of these graphics as basically all BBC News Astons are aligned around that.
5 - Likelihood factor: Would this ever be put onto the air?
No. Think about it? I now that The Day Today had a message but I don't think they meant you should have a title card that was this simple.
Also you could ask is it an improvement? No - the current look is fine, it's legible, it's a clearly defined brand and it looks quite nice.
This reaches one of the criteria above and not the most significant one either hence why it is just worthy of two stars.
A few other pointers
- Generally on here people have a little description of what their mock is about, rather than just uploading it and going constructive criticism.
- Since when has PowerPoint been a valid piece of graphics software? What next Open Office Impress mocks? PowerPoint isn't really a piece of graphics software and isn't meant to be - you could try and make something really nice in PowerPoint but it would take ages and ages.
