ITN News Presentation 2008 - UPDATED

8/8/08 - Updated extensively; see page 2

You'll probably think I'm barking, but I've created a series of mocks for news on ITV - branded ITN again. I just wondered how graphics would be utilised with the ITN name on screen once again. I've used this opportunity to correct what I think are flaws in the current ITV News presentation package - namely the silly "Live" bug and the way they stretch location names.

I haven't finished them all yet but could you please tell me what you think of the following and whether I should complete the rest?

Good, but the first mock reminds me of a dinner plate. I'd like you to carry on - but try and make the clock on the aston not as strong, as it could make reading names off it a tad difficult.

Thanks for the (two....) comments so far. I've expanded on them and have created a selection of mocks based around the famous clockface. The Evening News has now become the "News at Six Thirty", and the lunchtime bulletin is now "The Lunchtime Report". I haven't done anything as far as studio designs yet or even a look for News at Ten, but maybe I'll have a crack at it shortly. No videos yet - but, again, maybe I'll whip something up!

As you can see I've re-added programme names to the opening sequences - something which I feel is desperately missing from ITV News' current opening titles.

I think the current ITV News live bug is impractical - whenever they're reporting from a place with a long name it's always condensed into a small strap. I know mine's not much better but it's a bit of an improvement. (The 'Live' text would be removed whenever there's a recorded report - i.e., "John spoke to us earlier on", etc.)

It's time to go back to a clear and concise endcap IMO..

I think I've done alright on these, but of course you're the judges. Please let me know what you think of these... good things? Improvements? etc...

I actually like the first strap tbh, although the colour could be a bit warmer. Good work though.

Good - but in some parts inconsistent. For example, in some astons there is a vertical gradient for the ITN logo on the aston, others diagonal - apart from those fine.

One thing I find interesting though is your use of colours - I would personally have used the colours for the Lunchtime Report for the Morning News - but that is my opinion.

Nice to see you took my aston clock comment on, love the graphic for the US elections - shame about the dinner plate though, it would be the absolute bee's knees if the clock was on an angle or something.

I like these, especially the News Channel and Lunchtime ones. Would the "News At Ten" stay the same?

I like the general graphics that would be used in reports but I have one criticism which are the end of the opening titles. They're a little too basic compared to what other news channels and programmes have, but I'll reserve judgment on those for if you decide to make a video. Oh one other point, I don't like italics, but then thats just me

The titles look a tad dull at the mo. Maybe if you could make the clockface 3D and glassy, it would look better.

Thanks for the comments so far... I'm currently re-working them to rid them of the 'basicness', if you could call it that. Will also try to make some video animations so you'll get an idea of how I want them to animate.

I like the presentation - could you tell me how you made the clock face. Have you done anything for the new News At Ten? Could you post a blank blue clock face?
