The 'About the BBC' page has changed:

Am I right in thinking that's the first New Style page?

I think that font is Helvetica.

I don't think so. It looks messy, not at all like the screenshots we saw of the new design. Plus they haven't used the new header.

That is absolutely horrific.

BBC Motion Gallery launching a Brand New Site in 9 Hours, according to the current website.
Also, Doctor Who's site sports the new logo, and they've got rid of a lot of the headers.

Am I the only one who thinks this photo of Michael Foot that the BBC News are leading with on their site looks more than slightly like someone's holding a gun to his head? Surely they could have found a better photo...

Remembering what he really looked like I would have to say they probably couldn't.

Gawd bless him and all that...

A rather unusual sight on the BBC iPlayer diagnostics page this evening. When you run the speed test, a little message appears above it stating that "the license for this application expires in 12 days; email contact@ookla.com for renewal questions".

This is obviously a message for the iPlayer team - there's no licensing implications for using the speed test as far as public end-users are concerned - but one wonders why Ookla has taken that approach to issuing a licensing reminder rather than, say, emailing the appropriate department at the BBC that licensed the software in the first place.

Why are the BBC promoting the beta page now? I thought that version had been scrapped.

According to the FAQs the beta uses "a brand new technical infrastructure", presumably something which they wish to start using sooner rather than later. From the blog it's hard to get a timescale for the changes mentioned, though the mention of "we need to finalise the masthead and footer" suggests it's still in the build phase. Also after the last home page resigned they may wish to introduce some of the changes more gradually, thus hoping to reduce the number of complaints.

The homepage and other sites under bbc.co.uk (including Weather) seems to be down at the moment. 'Error 500 - Internal Error' being spat out.

I really hope this article has it all wrong - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/pda/2010/mar/12/digital-media-bbc-launches-new-homepage

I'm quite sure the design of this beta homepage wasn't "developed in a collaboration with the graphic designer Neville Brody"... Plus the blog states they are moving away from the web 2.0 look.

I hope someone clears this confusion up soon! It would be odd for them to change to this version just a few months (presumably) before changing again.

It's hopefully the guardian putting 2 and something which looks like 2 but is in fact a 5 together to make 4.

Having said that, the current homepage doesn't match the other pages so heaven only knows what they're thinking. Might ask for clarification on the internet blog.
