I thought the Christmas Day offerings this year were extremely bad. The Christmas episode of EastEnders I felt was on too late, don't see why it couldn't have been put on at 8 instead of 9.
Because then it would've clashed with Coronation Street.

Corrie was originally meant to be on at 7 but it was changed because BBC changed EE's slot at the last minute. A programme which was meant to be shown on Christmas Day was pulled from the schedule and replaced with Monsters vs. Aliens and as a result the whole schedule had to be pushed back an hour.

The Royle Family perhaps.

No it wasn't. The announcement on the MBB FB page on November 30th said that MBB would be on Christmas Day on RTE, and St Stephen's Day (aka Boxing Day) on BBC.

I don't think this warrants a New Year thread so I'll put it here instead.

Which channels did something for New Year this evening?

Bid had a countdown to New Year with Peter Simon, auction assistant Helen (from Blackpool) and about 15 crew members. They had 4 party poppers and at least one bottle of champaign which seemed to mostly go all over the studio floor. This was broadcast on Bid, Price Drop and Speed Auction. It looked like a lot of fun.

Ideal World had a couple of presenters and 6 or 7 crew members doing the conga.

QVC had a Zumba party but this may have been recorded and didn't look very interesting.

What did SuperCasino/Live Roulette do? What about Smart Live Casino? What did Psychic Today do? What about Babestation and SportXXXGirls? The Islam Channel? Any caps?

A little-known but usually excellent Eurovision programme on BBC Two at 11:15am this morning - the New Year's Day Concert. In recent years it's started with Te Deum and the Eurovision logo. Usually the BBC has only televised the second half of the concert which is generally faster moving and slightly more light hearted (though this being Austria, expect plenty of very formal dress, polite clapping and (shock) foot tapping.)

For the first time (I think) the whole shebang is being shown live on BBC HD from 10:15am. BBC viewers have normally had to wait for the BBC Four/HD repeat to get ORF's excellent production and 5.1 sound mix.

Even if classical music's not your thing I recommend you give it a go - the production is usually extremely good and the pictures often extremely detailed (which can hammer the bitrate). If BBC HD is still 1920x1080i then it should look extremely good this year.

Ooh. Thanks for this - do you think there will be a BBC HD repeat this year or have I missed it in HD now? I recorded this from BBC TWO on my telly box remotely as I'm away from home just now, but forget to check for a BBC HD version. Can now see myself watching it next week slightly peeved that I'm not getting the full-length version with the very best pics and sound.

Petroc did say there'd be a highlights repeat on BBC Four ... whether it's repeated more than once I don't know. Looked good this year but as I'm not fully in the land of HD I couldn't comment on whether the current resolution of BBC HD has affected it one way or the other (I have a Freesat HD receiver ... and a CRT 32" telly. Can't bring myself to change it as it cost a fortune when new and there's nothing wrong with it!)

Incidentally, as it was being shown in full on the TV, we got the (slightly odd) ORF interval film - 20 minutes of people flying around Europe while dancing to a string quintet (I think, I wasn't entirely giving it my all). At the end there were credits and then a repeat of The Eurovision Fanfare title sequence (with a slightly messy join to Petroc Trelawny's commentary - was he on Radio 3 as well?)

It did !!! Excellent pictures and sound. A friend of mine saw it on ZDF, where a Rolex logo was shown. The Beeb very carefully avoided showing it, though that didn't stop Petroc T saying '. . .sponsored by Rolex' during his intro !

Over Christmas I set my HDD/DVD recorder to record Christmas presentation from BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies (including karaoke on 301), ITV1, ITV2, Channel 5, 5* and 5USA.

Did any of the other channels on Freeview (Pick TV, Yesterday, QVC, Dave, Quest, etc) have any Christmas presentation that I should have recorded but missed out on?

If anyone's after a copy of the Eurovision sting, you can get it (in three different durations) at http://www.ebu.ch/en/about/index.php
(VLC will play MXF files quite happily)

Which is a shame. It has been almost 31 years since Tumble Tower was first inspired to come up with his channel codes, 6th of March 1981 sometime between 10:35 and 10:54 to be precise. He has obviously put in a lot of hard work since then. I think 2012 could be the year that these codes really take off, what with a record number of television stations broadcasting in the UK and more and more of us choosing to live our lives in 140 characters or less. This really could be Tumble Tower's year.
