Christmas presentation on UTV started today and for the first time in quite a few years they've adopted the ITV1 Christmas identity, albeit altered.

First off, just one ident this year:

Humm, not sure, when I saw the pics I thought it looked really nice in red, but when I watched the ident I wasn't sure at all, the music is a little lack luster, and the red doesn't look as good.

But I suppose its because I'm used to the gold and black ITV1 design.

Can't believe UTV still use in-vision continuity.

Although the original in black does look better, considering it's obviously easy enough for UTV to change the colour perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea for ITV to have the ident in 3 or 4 different colours just to add a little bit of variety to them over Christmas.

Or to use it on the other ITV channels over Christmas. The sort of red that UTV are using would work well on ITV3, I'm sure they could do an inverse & colour change to make it green on a white background for ITV2 too, and then simply adapt the music & possibly speed for each channel.

Slightly ironic using an ITV plc design to celebrate 50 years of a local franchise!

I don't mind it, reminds me a little of early 1990s style presentation with the reds and the presents-round-the-tree hearth-with-roaring fire IVC set.

At least this year we'll get to see much more IVC than usual, not just when Julian's on duty, which is something some of us out there appreciate Wink

I'm actually surprised given the arguments between ITV and STV - that ITV hasn't put their foot down on UTV using their branding that they paid for.

Unless of course, UTV put a bit of cash to the design agency rather than just take the elements and re-work them.

ITV plc haven't minded UTV reusing bits of network Christmas presentation over the past few years (the 2003 snowflakes which turned up on various things for a few years, the 2001 network jingle on the UTV 2003 ident are two examples that spring to mind - not to mention UTV using the 2003 "four squares" video loop for their IVC backdrop in 2006!)

And given UTV have dipped their toes in bits and bobs of networked stuff, so I imagine they either pay their way to use the graphics via ITV plc or the design agency, or they are covered by any licence agreements given by the designers to ITV plc to use or adapt them.

Makes me wonder if all the companies had to contribute towards the production cost for, or pay towards being able to use them on their own-sourced material of, Christmas graphic packages created by one of the majors in the 1970s/1980s?

That's probably why they've only bothered to create one ident because really it's only being used during the day. Almost all links during the evening are done in-vision. Wonder if Robin will make an appearance this Christmas?

I hope so; thinking about it, Gilly is usually off over the Christmas holidays, and I imagine we'll see plenty of Pamela and Rose on duty as well as Julian, perhaps the odd shift from Sarah, Marc or Aidan as cover.

Or maybe they'll bring Robin in to do in-vis weather, or again, use Marc or Pamela, or (most likely) not bother with in-vis weather until UTV Live is back to regular service.

Sadly, I think we've probably seen the last of Robin Taylor at Havelock House; a real shame, as he was the best announcer UTV employed in years.

I think it is brilliant that UTV still have in-vision continuity - loads of other countries around Europe do - it makes the whole channel feel more welcoming and in the case of an ITV region, more local.

There will come a time when one of the main channels thinks (or gets told by an agency) that in-vision continuity would be a cool and trendy idea and then every channel will start doing it again.
