Again, why another call for a blind widescreen 'upgrade'

Woah woah!!! Crikey talk about taking my posting and running away with it!

I re-iterate my point; a lot of their programming is made in 16:9 and it seems silly me to show 16:9 material in 4:3 (or 14:9) on a 16:9 platform. In other words, I would like to see them operate exactly how the BBC, ITV, C4, C5, Sky & others are doing now. If a programme is made in 4:3 then it's shown in 4:3. If a programme is made in 16:9 (as a lot of UKTV's output is) then it's shown in 16:9. There is no detrimantal effect on 4:3 viewers, in fact it's better for them because they can choose what to do with 16:9 images.

It's hardly a controversial request. I'm not bothered about adverts, trailers and idents. And I doubt 4:3 viewers are either. This is how terrestrial channels work so why shouldn't the biggest (is it?) digital channel operator also work in the same way?!??

The new uktv network off air screen is a bit disappointing compared to previous ones where it would display all the channels on the network in little boxes. The new one is just purple with ' uktv brings you home' written on the left. Well it was last night on uktv history .......maybe that was temporary until they design a new one ??

There still calling it UK Gold on the end of the TV Programs, something like "UK Gold wants you to vote for best comedy vote now at www.ukgold.tv" Mad!! Very Happy

I was going to post this last night but didn't bother in the end. Before the off air screen is put up though, they do have a little animation which shows all the UKTV channel names over whch the closing animation is made, before they cut to to the off air screen (you can see the transisition if you look closely).

It's a shame the old screen has gone, but I think this new one probably is here to stay for the time being, after all, outside of Freeview (where UK History showed it all night) there was almost no opportunity to see the old off air screen, in contrast to the past where it was shown all the time, so they probably won't bother so much any more.

Arrow Worse point : Why have they STILL not upgraded to Widescreen? I'd guess that at least 50% of their output is made in 16:9, the digital mediums all support 16:9, so why do we have to put up with chopped 4:3 pictures? Crikey, even $KY channels now show in Widescreen.

Probably because the UKTV channels (along with all the BBC channels) are moving to a new building later this year, and it's not worth converting over this late in the day.

Another big hurdle is that all their master tapes of originally widescreen programmes are in14:9. To convert to widescreen is a huge job as each programme would have to be, bought back in from the BBC and re-editted* to provide the new widescreen masters for UKTV.

*Remember the copies UKTV, World and Prime broadcast are not the same as the ones that domestic BBC broadcast - they have advert breaks in, and often have edits both for compliance reasons (to make them conform with ITC/Ofcom regulations) and to remove topicality

What on Earth is with that UK Documentary ident? It's so pathetically poor - the end loops every few seconds, the zoom out isn't smooth and you can tell they've moved the camera when the building suddently fades into a blurred one. It's as though they haven't tried at all and yet UK History's idents had been so good at launch.

I don't like the new DOGs either. There's too much text now.

Of course the major thing here is the channel names... "UKG2" was stupid, "UKTVG2" is even more so.

I expect that the Freeview EPG will say something like "UKTVBghIds" soon, making it look even messier.

LOL, I thought the same... I think they have made two films and stuck them together, which is why the 'look' of Tower 42 changes... I don't think you'd get a TV camera powerful enough to zoom in from so far away...

one bright idea: having one site for all the channels
one bad idea: those phrases
UKTV Gold: Brings you home
UKTV G2: Television with bite
UKTV Style: Brighten your world
UKTV Food: Bringing food to life
UKTV History: Why we are who we are
UKTV People: This is who we are
UKTV Documentary: This is how we live :UPDATED:
Don't you think they could be more imaginative?

UKTV Documentary's phrase is 'this is how we live', and 'brings you home' is the whole network, not just Gold. Actually some of the phrases (particularly those for the factual channels) are alright, I think...

I wonder if they've started this process, as when Play UK used to show The League Of Gentlemen, it was always in 14:9 letterbox. Since moving to UK Gold, it's been shown in full 16:9 letterbox instead... perhaps sourced from a proper widescreen version?
