A lot of Sky One's recent shows is that some of these shows have went straight to On Demand. It seems like Sky is pushing a sort of Netflix-type service in order to gain more customers and to push it's Q service, meaning that some of the channels purposes has been diminished. Why would I watch Sky One or Sky Arts when the episodes are already there On Demand?

Most of the Sky original productions have been made on-demand - viewers are a damn sight more likely to binge shows than wait for a week, unless it is a highly anticipated series, as London Lite has mentioned. It doesn't render the Sky entertainment channels obsolete - they are still there to bolster Sky TV/NOW TV and it still brings in a chunk of ad revenue for Sky.
What does the future hold? Will streaming services make more burgeoning moves to counter linear platforms? Or are traditional TV broadcasters still holding on in today's television space?
The answers to this question depends on the question surrounding the types of programmes that will be produced and watched in the future. The types of TV programmes produced have changed over time as a result of not only changing consumer tastes but also technology and the economics of production and broadcasting.
The BBC is to an extent parallel to independent producers and broadcasters due to the peculiar way that it is funded.

Holding a large back catalogue of potentially sellable programmes provides an additional dimension for a broadcaster to play with in the future.
