Not sure if that's a good thing or not - while it is good to see ITV Wales providing their own analysis as they have done in the past ditching Steve Rider for Francis Donovan isn't exactly an inspired move.

It will, however, put a break in the ITV "national" team's constant wittering about England, even during matches that have nothing to do with the men in white...er...black.

Talking of strip colours, as I expected on the scorebar, the rose of England is on a black background and the Argentina badge on a blue/white gradient.

Must agree with most posts, in that I think the coverage so far has been pretty good. Fair play ITV.

Why hasn't anyone whispered in Steve Rider's ear that a score margin of 13-9 does not constitute a "single point"?

EDIT: It wasn't a "bonus" victory either because England couldn't muster 4 tries.... Argentina however get a "losing" bonus point for being within 5? points.

Nick Mullins doing a better job of commentating than Martin Gillingham did for NZ/TON yesterday. For some of the smaller matches, ITV have only sent 1 commentator -- Bob Symonds doing NAM/FIJ solo this morning.

Did STV and UTV show this with the ITV1 idents or did ITV Breakfast let them start broadcasting early like GMTV did when the F1 was on?

STV ident with announcer.

So, this must mean that the ITV network owe some time to ITV Breakfast. I wonder what form this will take.

As they have started airing 'normal' programmes at weekends from 8:25am, they'll probably just show more 'normal' programmes at 9:25am at various times at weekends, so will be practically unnoticable.

Last Sunday, CITV programmes went on until 10:30. STV normally opt out at 9:25 on a Sunday but last weekend didn't, so presumably this was ITV Breakfast programming.

ITV Wales doing their own coverage for SA V Wales.... I've switched over to ITV England, just for consistency's sake.

Also, they credited Gareth Thomas as winning his first cap at the 2005 World Cup. Rolling Eyes

I see Scrum V have a programme tonight too, presumably with no actual match action. Did S4C offer alternate English commentary?

Scrum V is on, but don't forget the Celtic League / Pro12 season is very much under way at present, there was a full slate of matches this weekend, so I expect that will be the main focus of the programme, with a relatively shorter section at the start for the World Cup.

And no, S4C can't offer English commentary because ITV have the rights to English language coverage.

Ah, I'd forgot about the Pro12 RoboRugby League of the Doomed or whatever it's called now, though in my defence it is labelled Scrum V World Cup Special.

And another 1-0 to rugby where the Premiership and Celtic League keep going throughout the World Cup, while in football they complain if they have to play a month beforehand!

A Pro12 team (Leinster) won the Heineken Cup this year, so I wouldn't be too hard on it. In fact its 2007 since a Premiership team last won the Heineken Cup. The problem with stopping the domestic leagues during the World Cup is that it would mean the domestic season wouldn't get going till November and would probably run on into July. The Celtic League used to stop during international windows when there was only ten teams in it, but the expansion to twleve (and addition of the play-offs) mean that there is now 24 gameweeks instead of just 18, so the extra six weeks needed to be fitted somewhere. There seems to be a big resistance in rugby to running games midweek (and in fairness, it is a lot more physical than football so more recovery time is needed). There will be a break in the Pro 12 nearer the end of the World Cup.

Back to TV presentation and I saw TG4's coverage today (not my first choice, since I don't speak Irish, but more through sleeping through the Ireland game). They're using the generic title sequence and host broadcaster graphics too. Graphics generated by the host broadcaster are in English, whilst those added by TG4 are in Irish. TG4 have the rights to repeat games in full, but can only show them in daytime (between 11:00am and 4:00pm I think).

On the subject of the host broadcaster graphics BTW, I meant to ask: since when did the term for the bench become "Reserves"? It was "Replacements" up till recently though more recently seems to have become "Substitutes".

UTV didn't opt out for their own coverage this morning, and there's little evidence to suggest they are doing anything for Ireland's remaining matches (and beyond). They don't appear to sent a reporter out to New Zealand either. A disappointment, yet hardly a surprise when the station's presenting talent involved in the last World Cup no longer work there.

Blogs on the UTV website about the tournament are coming from former international Tyrone Howe, rather than UTV staff.

Probably a southern hemisphere thing. They do insist on calling fly-halves "five-eighths" or some similar rubbish.
