I saw in the Radio Times that another Royle Family Christmas Special has been made. One thing I noticed in the cast list is that next-door neighbour Mary Carroll (Doreen Keogh) isn't in the special, but her husband Joe and daughter Cheryl are. I wonder why the actress isn't in the episode?
I'm not liking the look of the promo shot of the caravan... didn't they learn from last year's farce of an episode that taking it out of the house amongst other people really doesn't work.
For years they hyped the parents of Dave and how boring they were, and then they dare to bring them into it, and it really didn't live up to the writing.
Does not sound good given they had to get the actors back in the studio but we'll see. So long as it's better than last years, which apparently they only had 2 weeks to write before filming, which probably explains why the pace was too fast and it went a bit slapstick.
Perhaps Doreen Keogh (Cheryl's mum) was suffering with ill health or something.
That's one disadvantage of shooting on film... What you think you see isn't always what you get. (With video, what you see on the monitor and through an electronic viewfinder should be pretty close to what you get off the tape/disk/flash etc. when you play it back)

Not always though, I've known one occasion when there was a fault either with the record head or the tape and it was only noticed when the tape was played back afterwards and it was just a blocky mess. I've known about a couple of occasions when for some reason (usually a wrong setting) a disc or tape can only be played back in the camera... and the camera has the wrong outputs!

Bearing in mind Mary (appears to be) is a Catholic, perhaps there's some kind of scene with the two of them while she's at mass?
It is possible Doreen Keogh is suffering from ill health. I have read as well that Caroline Aherne has said she could possibly write more Royle Family episodes, or at least specials. Does anyone think, though, that there should be more? Although it is a great comedy, all comedy series can't run for too long. Does anyone else think that some comedies became stale after running for too long?

It all depends on how good the writer is. The Royale Family has a bit of story to run yet so a few more specials will be good. I personally still think a few more Vicar of Dibley specials could be done but its unlikely given they have given up on it.

I think there could be more specials or couple of series of The Royle Family yet, owing to the long gaps between them.
