I just can't believe that all this time they've been using the "Holidays Are Coming" advert, and they've not bothered making a 16:9 version of it. For a company making the money they're doing, and for an advert that's now meant to symbolise the start of Christmas... it's fairly lazy.

Or, as it's a nostalgia thing, leaving it in 4:3 adds to the "just like Christmas used to be" feel?

The advert would just look terrible if they cropped it.

Absolutely (the same applies to most things that get butchered though!) but I think the point littlesmegger was making was about them not remaking it from scratch in 16:9.

The "red car and the blue car had a race" Milky Way adverts have been on for a few months.

Albeit not in its original form as it's had 10 seconds chopped out since it was originally aired.

The narration's slightly changed as well. 'Smart Old Blue, He Took The Milky Way' is now 'Good Old Blue etc etc'

I believe that the advert has the 'marks and scratches' to hide the junctions where the old footage and the new footage merges since all the watches in the advert are replaced with their current range, including on the 'Accu-Woman'.

I think the watches are just painted over on top of the original footage, and I'm not sure how marks and scratches would help hide the joins. I'd say it looked a little better than "cleaned up VHS", but they obviously haven't gone back to the original film (if it even exists).

I don't remember it being "Smart Old Blue", but I'm sure they've changed one line from "cos he knows it won't spoil his appetite" to "cos he knows it's something that tastes just right."

It's PC gone mad! (on acid)

That's the main changed line they were talking about which has been chopped out altogether now. Originally the wording changed as mentioned, but presumably because they got tired of people shouting about 'omg political correctness (did the Daily Mail by any chance have a front page campaign too?)', they've subsequently cut it completely from the rerunning ad.

Of course, nothing says Christmas like a convoy of blindingly lit, over-decorated red wagons, carrying an extra
large consignment of fizzy, gassy, sugary, syrupy, seriously over-rated, tooth rooting sh*te, now does it ... ?!?

I have to be honest ... I absolutely, thoroughly, totally, and utterly HATE and detest that bl**dy advert!

They also changed the billboard at the end which used to say "The sweet you can eat between meals without ruining your appetite" to "Lighten Up and Play".

There are also more subtle changes, the original race went from Lunchtown to Dinnertown, it now goes from Playtown to Lighttown.

Re Milky Way, I think the line they took out was "Because it doesn't ruin your appetite", their long running catchphrase. I'm sure it used to be " Smart ol' Blue" too...

It's amazing to think how many sweets marketed themselves for years on helping you to work, rest and play, being non-appetite ruining, being able to melt in your mouth and not in your hand and being "Just enough to give your kids a treat" when now dinnerladies actively go around the dinnerhall and remove chocolate bars from kids' sandwich boxes.

Another ad I'd love to see back is the classic Turkish Delight "Full of Eastern Promise".

There's a programme on ITV1 tonight called 'Ads of the Decade' with a top 20 countdown of the 'best' (read: most expensive) adverts. Although judging by the trailer, almost all of the adverts featured are from the last four or five years.

Horray, the "decade" part means the obvious Surfer advert can't be included for probably the first time ever! Laughing
