What drives me crazy is the number of programmes related to selling old stuff (auctions etc):
Flog It!
Bargain Hunt
Cash In The Attic
When I was a kid, there was just "Antiques Roadshow" with Arthur Negus. When he retired Hugh Scully took over.
Circa 1994 / 95, BBC1 started a programme called "The Great Antiques Hunt" featuring a red team and green team, plus the hound dog who appeared when the scores were announced. It was dubbed "a middle class version of The Price Is Right". The team who won, and thus had the chance to pick an item from the top table tended not to pick the most valuable item. I never liked that, thankfully it only ran for one or two series.

Competing with This Morning doesn't mean they have to copy its type of programme.
Having diffrent programmes instead of one big one is a concious decision by the BBC to do something diffrent to ITV... I don't know how well they do now but at one point BBC1's offerings were more popular than This Morning

The BBC shows way to many lifestyle programmes and it seems to have got much worse in the last 12 months or so with a new schedule every afternoon on BBC2 showing what BBC1 used to show in the mornings.
BBC1 needs to think about changing it's morning schedule, maybe try a chat show or something like they used to with something like Kilroy or Good Morning with Anne and Nick. They need to compete with ITV1's This Morning and find a new double act to host it.

I think they still are, Jeremy Kyle beats the BBC but otherwise it's pretty much a solid audience, so considering the fact that the BBC schedule has been lagging behind for years they are in fact infront now, but this is mainly due to the property/auction type programmes rather than the ITV copycat programmes such as Anne & Nick and The Morning Show.

Hugh Scully took over from Angela Rippon. Arthur Negus was an Antiques expert. AIUI

Here's David Attenborough's actual speech- not quite how it was reported:
