Sounds intriguing!

One thing I've wondered is when the launch date will be this year. The English lockdown isn't due to be scaled down until December 3rd (although a further extension is possible), so perhaps the Christmas ident may be held back until Saturday the 5th?? Pure speculation on my part, I hasten to add.

Saturday 5th makes sense even without lockdown, as Monday 30th is too early.

Advent starts on 29th November this year, so in religious terms it's not too early.

I think we should reuse the 1998 idents this Christmas

They could recreate the huge bauble with CGI due to the advancements in technology 22 years later

With each home nation often having diverged lockdown/restrictions statuses (which are all continually subject to potential changes, extensions etc), a UK-wide broadcaster basing their festive pres launch date & time around such considerations is a non-starter.

The planned launch in non-pandemic circumstances would've always been something fundamentally logical (e.g. 1st December either pre-Breakfast or pre-The One Show, or something?), and it would be best not to deviate from such a plan.

If the launch happens, say, immediately pre-Strictly on the evening of 5th December, then the thinking will be more to do with coinciding with a popular viewing attraction than the lockdown statuses of any/all parts of the UK.

Yes, that would indeed make sense. I think the last time we had a non-weekend launch of the Christmas ident was the 2015 Sprout Boy ones.

The only thing they wouldn't want to do is launch them off the back of a briefing with bad news, but unlikely they would anyway. I wonder if they'll use the Christmas pres for the PIFs - presumably the news safe variant which even in questionable years are usually rather nice.

My guess would be either Tuesday 1st Dec at either 7:30 or 8:00 or Saturday 5th Dec after Strictly

After not before so they can trail it before and at the end of Strictly

Why not just play the promo in full before Strictly as the ident for it or before the first ident of the package, then all programmes after feature new idents? That way, the big audience for the show will see it, rather than after Strictly a lot switch off and will miss it.

I bet that this year's Christmas pres will be along the same lines as this current crop of bad idents. People putting their decorations up, Christmas trees, lights and Christmas jumpers.

I'm happy to say that you've lost your bet. From what I've seen, this Christmas on BBC One is going to be popular.

I bet it won't be on here. Unless it has a central symbol, we won't have a decent Christmas ident. We haven't had a decent BBC1 Christmas ident since 2015 really.

As long as it doesn't mention that "o**ness" word or make a Christmas version of it, or just make up a term and stick a hastag in front of it, like last years #Xmaslife I'll be happy.

I therefore predict that you won't be happy. The same goes for me, but I'd like to be proved wrong.
