An oddity about UTV though was that they kept the music that went with the celebrity idents for ages afterwards before eventually reverting (for a while) to the UTV Jingle.

Similarly Channel kept the ITV1 2006 (v1) music for a good number of years after it had been replaced on ITV1 itself.

I have always remembered this period in the mid-00s as ITV1's nadir, stuff like Celebrity Wrestling and Celebrity Love Island that seemed to be neither that popular or well reviewed. "It's Now or Never" getting dropped after one episode, and all the rip-offs of BBC formats like Dragon's Den, The Apprentice and Who Do You Think You Are.

Some good did come out of it of course, like TV Burp surprisingly becoming a Saturday night hit. And to be fair, ITV1 did get 8 shows in the top 10 TV ratings in 2006, but the perception of the channel certainly wasn't great.

The big shows still did well for them, but often it seemed to be in spite of ITV rather than because of them. The notorious one was the axing of Foyle's War, when it was still a big hit for them, which the next controller had to embarrassingly reverse and recommission. I seem to remember a bit of rancour behind the scenes of Prime Suspect as well. They did well in the autumn but they'd more or less given up in the summer.

The things like Tycoon, and the poaching of Trinny and Susannah, reminds me of the comment that if you nick BBC2 formats, you get BBC2-style ratings, which aren't good enough for ITV. I never understood why they were so desperate to get rid of It's Now Or Never, though, there were only two episodes! And when they did finally show the second episode, it was in arguably a more prominent slot, at Christmas, than in the middle of July when it was supposed to be on.

It might have been Simon Shaps, or someone else, who I recall poo-pooing the success of Doctor Who as "it was a revival". Which are apparently always a surefire hit, as the success of the Crossroads revival illustrates.
